After numerous hits, Shakira’s recording-breaking career hit a pause when the singer was in a relationship with Gerard Piqué and raising a family. The pop star was with the FC Barcelona star for 11 years and shares two kids with him – Sasha and Milan. Since then her name has been permanently attached to Spain.
The Spain tax authorities have tracked down soccer stars including Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi for failing to pay their full due in taxes. These players were found guilty of tax evasion but avoided jail time. And now even the ‘Waka Waka’ singer is added to the list, for the second time.
Shakira Is Accused Of Tax Crime Again
The Colombian pop star has been charged with tax evasion for the second time by the Spanish government. These charges go way back to 2018 when Shakira was living in Barcelona with Gerard Pique and was therefore required to tax all her international revenue. The Spanish government also argued that “she instead diverted her money to companies domiciled in countries with low taxation and high opacity”.
Last July, the Spanish tax officials opened the case against Shakira, reviewing the evidence that they gathered over the last two months, bringing on the charges. The Spanish prosecutors have charged the singer for paying 6.7 million euros in taxes on her 2018 income. The Barcelona prosecutors stated that Shakira is alleged to have used an offshore company based in a tax haven to avoid paying the tax.

Will Shakira Face Jail Time And For How Many Years?
According to the Spanish Daily El Mundo, prosecutors claimed that Shakira failed to declare just over £13 million in income and claimed false deductions totaling around £5.5 million. The singer has to face up to eight years in prison if convicted of the six counts of tax fraud totaling £12.6 million she is facing trial for from November 20 at a court in Barcelona.
However, Shakira has denied the claims and insisted she will fight the accusations that are charged against her in court instead of seeking a last-minute deal offered by the Spanish state prosecutors. Also, Shakira’s legal advisors released a statement saying, “Shakira has not received any formal notification of the Prosecutor’s complaint that has been, according to the media, filed for the fiscal year 2018”.
