In response, a representative for Sweeney issued a statement to PEOPLE, questioning Baum’s choice to attack another woman in the industry. Speaking on behalf of Sydney, the representative condemned Baum’s comments as “shameful“, suggesting that they reflect poorly on her character.
“How sad that a woman in the position to share her expertise and experience chooses instead to attack another woman,” the representative said in the statement. “If that’s what she’s learned in her decades in the industry and feels is appropriate to teach to her students, that’s shameful. To unjustly disparage a fellow female producer speaks volumes about Ms. Baum’s character,” the statement read further.
Carol Baum Reportedly Regrets Her Comments About Sydney Sweeney
Carol Baum is known for her work on iconic films like ‘Father of the Bride‘ and ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer‘. The producer made the critical comments against Sweeney during a discussion with The New York Times film critic Janet Maslin. She also mentioned watching one of Sydney’s films, ‘Anyone But You‘, deeming it unwatchable.
On the contrary, Sydney’s talent has garnered heavy support from her fans worldwide. Her performances in ‘Euphoria‘ and ‘Immaculate‘ have been well received. The young actress is considered one of the rising stars of Hollywood, as she also recently made her production debut.
After the backlash, TMZ reported that Baum has expressed regret for her comments and acknowledged that she does not typically speak negatively about actors in such a manner. However, a representative for Baum did not immediately respond to requests for further clarification.
