It’s a sad day for Hollywood as it has lost one of the most renowned actors – James Caan. The actor starred as gangster Sonny Corleone in 1972’s cult classic film, ‘The Godfather’. According to a statement released by his family on his official Twitter account, Caan breathed his last on July 6. He was 82.
Caan grew up in Bronx, New York City, and was the son of German-Jewish immigrants. Condolences have been pouring in for the star from his family, friends, and fans. Among Hollywood personalities, filmmakers James Gunn, Matt Reeves, and others paid tribute to the late actor.

James Caan Dies Aged 82
Known for playing tough guys on screen, James Caan passed away at the age of 82. The news of his demise was shared by his family on his Twitter account on Thursday.
The statement read, “It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Jimmy on the evening of July 6. The family appreciates the outpouring of love and heartfelt condolences and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time.”
Caan was one of the most popular stars of his era. He received an Oscar nomination in 1973 for his role in ‘The Godfather’ and a 1972 Emmy nomination for ‘Brian’s Song’. His acting credits also include ‘E.T.’, ‘Misery’, ‘Funny Lady’ and ‘Elf’, among others.
Celebrities Pay Tribute To Caan
After the news of James Caan’s death broke, social media was swept up with tributes. Filmmaker James Gunn tweeted, “Rest In Peace James Caan. There are so many movies of his I love, The Godfather films of course being at the very top, but here are a few more I adore (Thief in particular was a Gunn family classic – I had the poster on my wall in high school).”
Director Matt Reeves also remembered Caan and wrote, “So sad. Such an incredible, towering actor. RIP.”
In a statement to Deadline, ‘Misery’ director Rob Reiner said, “I was so saddened to hear about Jimmy leaving us. I loved working with him. Besides being a talented instinctive actor, he was the only Jew I knew who could rope a calf with the best of them. Sending my love to his family.”
Billy Dee Williams, who starred with Caan in ‘Brian’s Song’ tweeted, “Team Mates and friends till the end. RIP Jimmy.” Many other celebrities also remembered Caan fondly.
One of the best actors of his generation, James Caan shall always be remembered and his work will inspire many actors. We wish strength to his dear ones in their tough time.
