Tom Holland has revealed one of the funniest behind-the-scenes stories from working with Jon Bernthal. While filming together in Ireland, Bernthal took method acting so seriously that he refused to speak for two straight weeks because his character was mute.
Holland happily played along and even became Bernthal’s unofficial spokesperson at restaurants. But after days of staying completely silent, all it took was one simple mistake involving a slice of lemon for the actor to suddenly break character in the most unexpected way.
Jon Bernthal Leaned On Tom Holland For Support
Tom Holland recently opened up about working with Jon Bernthal and revealed just how seriously the actor took his role. Bernthal was playing a mute character, so he decided to stay silent the entire time they were filming.
The funny part was that Holland had become one of his closest friends just a few weeks before shooting, so Bernthal asked him to help with everything.
Holland recalled, “John was playing a mute. He was like, ‘I’m not going to talk. I’m going full method. I’m going to need your help.’” Holland was happy to help and thought, “Sure, why not?“. But Bernthal actually committed to it. For two whole weeks, he did not say a single word.
Even ordering food turned into a full team effort. Bernthal would write down everything he wanted, and Holland had to read it out to the restaurant staff.
Holland joked, “For two weeks, not a peep out of him. We’re sitting at restaurants, and he’s writing down his food. I’m having to say, ‘I’m sorry about my friend. He’s just a pretentious actor.’”.
One Lemon Ended The Whole Experiment
Things finally went off the rails during the dinner. Bernthal ordered salmon and wanted some lemon to squeeze over it. Since he was still in full method mode, he wrote down the request and asked Holland to tell the waitress.

Holland politely asked for some lemon for the salmon, but the waitress got the wrong idea. Instead of putting the lemon next to the fish, she casually dropped it straight into Bernthal’s glass of water.
That was it. The method acting era was officially over. Holland laughed while remembering the moment, saying, “She brought the lemon and dropped it in his water. Immediately he was like, ‘ALRIGHT, F*** IT. I’M TALKING AGAIN’”. Two weeks of complete silence ended because of one innocent lemon.
The story surely gave fans a hilarious glimpse into Jon Bernthal’s commitment. Safe to say, one misplaced slice of lemon did what two weeks of dedication could not, and the silence was officially over.
