Kansas City Chiefs’ Travis Kelce has gained some extraordinary fame in the past few months, especially after he started dating pop sensation, Taylor Swift. Adding another bright feather to his cap was the recent Super Bowl win his team acquired. The Chiefs’ tight end contributed significantly to his team’s big victory this year.
To add more to his glory, Kelce was awarded the Athlete of the Year award at the People’s Choice Awards. Though many might think that this is just another feat for the star NFL player, there’s an interesting twist to this achievement. When Kelce was nominated for this award, he was quite vocally skeptical about it.

Travis Kelce, the 34-year-old tight end of the Kansas City Chiefs, was not present during the awards ceremony as he has been spending time in Missouri after his Super Bowl win.
Nominated in the category alongside several stars like Coco Gauff, Giannis Antetokounmpo, LeBron James, Lionel Messi, Sabrina Ionescu, Simone Biles and Stephen Curry, Kelce had expressed skepticism about the nomination. He had even so a step ahead by calling his nomination “fu*king nonsense”, according to a report by Page Six.
During a January episode of his and his brother Jason Kelce’s ‘New Heights‘ podcast, Travis had told Jason that he didn’t belong in the category alongside such great names. “What did I do to get Athlete of the Year? I did ‘SNL,’” Travis said at the time. “How am I on this [list]?”
He however failed to acknowledge the possible influence of his relationship with pop star Taylor Swift, who also won awards at the ceremony.

During the podcast, Kelce also commented on Simone Biles’ inclusion in the category as he questioned why her boyfriend, Green Bay Packer’s safety Jonathan Owens, wasn’t included. “How is Simone Biles on this but her boyfriend [sic] isn’t?” Jason asked.
Travis didn’t seem surprised by Owens’ exclusion. “Owens? Played some good ball over there, I guess,” he said.
Owens had sparked controversy in December by making comments about being more of a “catch” than his wife, Simone Biles. “I always say that the men are the catch,” Owens had said during a guest appearance on the ‘Pivot‘ podcast.
Though he faced some backlash initially, Biles defended Owens throughout the incident, and the eventually also couple got married in April 2023.
