“We Had To Leave Our Baby”: Meghan Markle Recalls Having To Choose Royal Duty Even After Her Son’s Nursery Caught Fire

Meghan Markle and her husband Prince Harry stepped down from their royal duties on March 31, 2020. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex relocated to North America, and since then, have been living a life independent of royalty.

Meghan recently released her own Spotify podcast titled, Archetypes. According to the press release, the series will “investigate the labels that try to hold women back.” Meghan will “uncover the origin of these stereotypes and have uncensored conversations with women who know all too well how these typecasts shape narratives.” In the debut episode of Archetypesthe Duchess recalled the horrifying fire incident surrounding her son Archie, and how she still had to choose her royal duties over her son.

In the first episode of Archetypesthe Duchess had a conversation with Serena Williams, the tennis champion, and her longtime friends. Serena knows the experience of being a mother and having to balance it out with her professional aims. She shares a four-year-old daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr., with her husband Alexis Ohanian. While speaking about their responsibilities as mothers, Meghan revealed what happened during her tour to South Africa.

Meghan narrated the unfortunate event, “When we went on our tour to South Africa, we landed with Archie. Archie was what, four and a half months old. And the moment we landed, we had to drop him off at this housing unit that they had had us staying in.” She continued, “He was going to get ready to go down for his nap. We immediately went to an official engagement in this township called Nyanga, and there was this moment where I’m standing on a tree stump and I’m giving this speech to women and girls, and we finish the engagement, we get in the car and they say, ‘There’s been a fire at the residence.’ What? ‘There’s been a fire in the baby’s room.’ What?

The Duchess rushed back to the residence and found Archie’s nanny, Lauren, in a flood of tears. Meghan further said, “She was supposed to put Archie down for his nap, and she just said, ‘You know what? Let me just go get a snack downstairs.’ And she was from Zimbabwe, and we loved that she would always tie him on her, her back with a mud cloth, and her instinct was like, ‘Let me just bring him with me before I put him down.’ In that amount of time that she went downstairs, the heater in the nursery caught on fire. There was no smoke detector. Someone happened to just smell smoke down the hallway went in, fire extinguished.” She added, “He was supposed to be sleeping in there.” Archie got saved by a life-threatening incident just by a hair’s length.

After the fire incident, they relocated to another homestay. Meghan said that she had asked to let people know what had happened but focus more on “how it feels.” The Duchess, in her podcast, through this story highlighted a very important reality. She said, “The focus ends up being on how it looks instead of how it feels. And part of the humanizing and the breaking through of these labels and these archetypes and these boxes that we’re put into is having some understanding on the human moments behind the scenes that people might not have any awareness of and to give each other a break.” She then added, “Because we did — we had to leave our baby”. Meghan had to choose her royal duties over her baby, over how she felt. Serena replied to the incident, “I couldn’t have done that. I would have said, ‘Uh-uh.'”
