James Cameron has made some of the biggest films in cinema history. Two of his directorial ventures, ‘Titanic‘ and ‘Avatar‘, have been one of the highest-grossers of all time. He is currently gearing up for the release of ‘Avatar: The Way of Water.’
In a recent interview, the 68-year-old filmmaker talked about the ‘Avatar‘ sequels and what might happen to them if this one fails. Let’s find out in detail what Cameron said about his films and many more things. Keep on reading to know about it.
James Cameron Talks About ‘Avatar’ Sequels
Cameron spent nearly a decade of his life in ‘Avatar‘ and nearly the same amount of time in its four planned sequels. However, it will be tough for the film to break even, let alone be a blockbuster.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the ‘Aliens‘ director talked about the planned sequels. “We’ll probably finish movie three regardless because it’s all shot,” he said.
He continues, “We’d have to really crater for it not to seem like it was worth the additional investment. We’d have to leave a smoking hole in the ground. Now, hopefully, we get to tell the whole thing because five’s better than four, four’s better than three, and three’s better than two.”
Jim has also plans for a sixth and seventh film in the franchise. “I’d be 89 by then”, Cameron added. “Obviously, I’m not going to be able to make Avatar movies indefinitely, the amount of energy required.”
Cameron Won’t Be Directing All ‘Avatar’ Sequels
In the same interview, Cameron talked about a succession plan for future sequels. “I would have to train somebody how to do this because, I don’t care how smart you are as a director, you don’t know how to do this“, he said.
Earlier, he stated that he might not direct ‘Avatar 4‘ and five, calling them “all-consuming”. “I’ve got some other things I’m developing as well that are exciting”, he added.
“I think eventually over time – I don’t know if that’s after three or after four – I’ll want to pass the baton to a director that I trust to take over, so I can go do some other stuff that I’m also interested in. Or maybe not. I don’t know.”
