Emma Roberts Feels Women Are More Targeted With Nepotism Criticism
The 33-year-old actress, who is Julia Roberts’ niece made her acting debut in ‘Blow’ at the age of 9. And she has faced criticism of nepotism since a very young age. But Emma Roberts feels that young women are more targeted by this.
“I always joke, ‘Why is no one calling out George Clooney for being a nepo baby? [His aunt] Rosemary Clooney was an icon,’” she said. Roberts added, “I feel like young girls get it harder with the nepo baby thing. Like, I don’t really see people calling out sons of famous actors.” However, she thinks that no matter the gender, no one should face such criticism. Emma said she doesn’t think “anyone should be called out for wanting to follow their dream.”
The ‘Scream Queen’ star feels that viewers “loves an overnight success story.” The actress further explained, “And so if you’re kind of not the girl from the middle of nowhere that broke into Hollywood, there’s kind of an eye roll of like, ‘Well, your dad was this.’” Roberts also added, “People only see your wins, because they only see when you’re on the poster of a movie — they don’t see all the rejection along the way.”

Emma Roberts Feels Having Connections Can Be Harmful As Well
Like everything else, having a celebrity family has its pros and cons as well. Emma Roberts explains the details in her conversation in the ‘Table for Two’ podcast. She argues that having connections in Hollywood is beneficial but can equally be harmful as well.
“People like to say, you know, you have a leg up because you have family in the industry. But then the other side to that is, you have to prove yourself more,” Roberts explained. “Also, if people don’t have good experiences with other people in your family, then you’ll never get a chance.” The ‘American Horror Story’ star also explained that watching Julia Roberts as a child deterred her to some extent as well.
“I saw very up close what that really looks like,” Roberts said referring to dealing with the stardom. “It’s obviously fun and it’s great, but there is a part of it that’s really scary.” But Emma has always wanted to carve out her own path in the industry. “Fame has never been the goal, because fame at a certain level is kind of scary,” she explained, noting that she never wanted her “fame to outweigh [her] work.” Roberts further explained, “Because there’s nothing scarier to me than being so famous that you’re never left alone, but also you’re not getting good jobs.”
