Kirsten Dunst is an actress best known for playing Mary Jane opposite Tobey Maguire in the three ‘Spider-Man‘ films. It was challenging to be a female child actor in a field dominated by men at the time. There were things that actresses just accepted in silence and later forgot them. The #MeToo movement normalized those conversations.
Dunst, now an Oscar-winning actress, claims she is no longer “nervous” on film sets and that she feels comfortable discussing everything. However, she remembers not standing up for herself while she was filming ‘Spider-man‘.

In an interview with Marie Claire, Kirsten Dunst recalled how her looks had her dealing with stereotypes and tasteless jokes that irked her on ‘Spider-Man‘ set. She said, “It was a joke, but on Spider-Man, they would call me ‘girly-girl’ sometimes on the walkie-talkie. ‘We need girly-girl.’ But I never said anything… Like, don’t call me that!”
She acknowledged how things were before the #Metoo campaign. “You don’t say anything, you just took it,” the ‘Marie Antoinette’ star added.
So, even after her poor experience, would she do another superhero? She surely would as they pay a lot and she has two kids to support. Dunst is married to ‘Love & Death‘ actor Jesse Plemons.

How Did She The Actress Deal With The Challenges?
Early on in her career, Kirsten Dunst felt like her looks would get her a role only so that she could be taken advantage of, so she gravitated towards female filmmakers. She explained, “I feel like I get hired because I’m someone that they might want to sleep with. I think that’s probably why I migrated to so many female directors at a younger age, because I didn’t want to feel that way. That’s great for some people. It’s not the artist that I want to be.”
Talking about her choice of films with substance, she added, “It was just growing up, and migrating to things that spoke to me. I always just navigated with my heart.”
