‘Lanterns’ Episode 7 may have completely changed the mystery surrounding Hal Jordan’s death. The real question might not be who killed Hal, but whether or not the Hal we saw throughout the story was really Hal Jordan in the first place.

The Hal John Knew May Not Have Been Real

One theory suggests that the Hal who fought John Stewart, spent 10 years in prison, and was eventually shot, was actually the Sentinel, a physical, sentient construct created from Hal’s Green Lantern ring or a part he took off it. If so, the real Hal may have been hiding in the background all along.

And, in all fairness, this could explain many of the oddities in Hal’s story. The Sentinel theory is particularly intriguing when linked to John Stewart. We have already seen how John can keep his Green Lantern constructs in place even when he’s not wearing the ring.

But what if that power, unknowingly, enabled the Sentinel to survive? The construct might have become self-aware and even remembered things, eventually believing that it was Hal Jordan. It would not have made sense to anyone around him, maybe even John, to ask any questions.

That would make Hal’s 10-year disappearance even more complicated. The man John fought may have genuinely believed he was Hal, while the real Hal remained somewhere else. It also adds a lot more darkness to John and Hal’s relationship. He might not have been just taking on his former mentor. He could have unknowingly been interacting with a construct he helped keep alive.

Then there’s the enigmatic 9mm. A gun in the bag attached to the box may be one of the most important pieces of the puzzle. When the real Hal found out what the Sentinel had become, maybe he was the one who finally put an end to it.

That would mean the bullet that killed “Hal Jordan” wasn’t necessarily fired by the person everyone thinks killed Hal. It could have been the real Hal eliminating his own creation. Then, the main conundrum of ‘Lanterns’ feels far more disturbing. Not “Who killed Hal Jordan?” But “Which Hal Jordan died?” If the show is taking this direction, then Episode 7 could have been giving us the answer all along.
