Yelena Belova, played by Florence Pugh, might be one of the most significant characters in the MCU without ever having been mentioned. ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ has a big cast with many familiar faces, but Kevin Feige has hinted that Yelena will be a major thread throughout the film.
It’s a big leap from being a side character in Black Widow to a major role in an Avengers film.
The Accent Helped Make Yelena Who She Is

Yelena was never meant to be a bearer of this magnitude of a story. She was the younger sister of Natasha Romanoff, one of the more grounded new characters that were introduced in the MCU’s post-’Endgame’ era, and a former assassin from the Red Room. However, Pugh’s work added a personality to her.

One of the most intriguing things in Yelena’s story is that it happened before audiences even met her. Pugh previously revealed that the idea was to have Yelena speak with an English accent. She did not think that it was appropriate for the character and started using a Russian accent for herself.
Even recorded audition tapes for Marvel as she worked on the voice. That was the pivotal moment for Yelena. Her accent, humor, and blunt personality helped to distinguish her from Natasha, rather than make her another Black Widow.
Yelena Went From Just Being Natasha’s Sister To A ‘Doomsday’ Anchor

Yelena’s significance also has an emotional component. Following Natasha’s death, Yelena was one of those who had to bear the emotional burden of that sacrifice. Her journey in ‘Hawkeye’ revealed that she was not just leaving behind Natasha, but also seeking to comprehend her sister’s final choice.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’ might take that journey to a much larger scale. Feige has specifically teased fans of Yelena about the upcoming film, while Pugh is part of an enormous cast that includes several generations of Marvel characters.
If she really is the emotional thread of the film, then ‘Doomsday’ would have a personal angle to the chaos of the multiverse. That could be the most unexpected aspect of Yelena’s MCU career. She wasn’t introduced as the next face of the Avengers. She just couldn’t be ignored. Now she might be the character that’s holding everything together.
