‘Lanterns’ Episode 7 feels less like a traditional penultimate chapter and more like the show is deliberately moving pieces into place for its final reveal. The episode continues Hal Jordan‘s bizarre mythology and brings John Stewart one step closer to understanding what happened before him.
Hal’s disappearance seems to be more than a sad incident in John’s investigation. There seems to be something bigger there, and the end might finally show how all these seemingly unrelated elements come together.
John Is Getting Closer To The Truth
One of the more interesting things that’s going on is how John’s relationship with Hal’s legacy continues to evolve. Initially, John was just following in the footsteps of another Lantern. He now wonders whether he should believe the version of Hal’s story he’s been told.

That makes the Halogram a very interesting storytelling device. It’s not just a digital version of Hal anymore, but a window into the past, perhaps not the whole past.
The episode also continues the tie-in between events on Earth and the rest of the Green Lantern mythology. Alien technology and the escalating Manhunter mystery are obvious proof that the Rushville investigation was not a small-town conspiracy. And then there is Sinestro.
Sinestro Could Hold The Key To The Finale
The more crucial part of Sinestro’s role is that he appears to know much more about what happened to Hal than John does. He’s not just responding to what’s happening; he’s been waiting for it to happen.

That’s what makes his mysterious promise that he “knows a way” all the more intriguing as he enters the finale. The biggest question now isn’t simply where Hal went. It’s what happened to him in between the man John remembers and the figure the story is gradually revealing.
Episode 7 might have been setting up the emotional and mythological stage for Hal to become Parallax instead of actually transforming him. And with only one episode left, ‘Lanterns’ has one huge task: make all those strange pieces finally click.
