More than six years after ‘Supernatural’ ended, Jensen Ackles has revealed a surprisingly simple way he would have left the door open for Sam and Dean Winchester to return.
Jack Could Have Changed The Ending
Speaking at Creation Charlotte 2026, Ackles suggested changing the final moments of the series. “I would have liked to have Jack come through the front door and just walk up to Sam and Dean and just be like, “I need to send you guys back… Which just opens the door to something in the future.”

Honestly, it would have been one heck of a cliffhanger. The original finale gave Dean and Sam a definitive ending. Dean died during a routine hunt, while Sam eventually grew old and lived a full life before dying and reuniting with his brother in Heaven.
The final scene, with the brothers meeting again beside the Impala, was deliberately emotional and brought their story full circle. Ackles’ idea wouldn’t necessarily have required throwing that moment away. Instead, he suggested that new footage could potentially be added to the bridge sequence, with Jack arriving and telling Sam and Dean that they had to return.
That one scene could completely change the meaning of their reunion. More importantly, it would give the show an easy explanation for why the brothers could eventually return to Earth.
‘Supernatural’ Already Has The Perfect Character For A Revival
The idea works because Jack isn’t just another powerful character. By the end of ‘Supernatural’, he has replaced Chuck as God and reshaped Heaven according to his own philosophy. That gives him the ability to bring Sam and Dean back if the situation becomes serious enough.

It also fits Jack’s character. Rather than personally stepping in whenever Earth faces danger, he could send the people he trusts to deal with it. And who better for that job than the Winchester brothers? There is currently no confirmed ‘Supernatural’ revival or Season 16, but Ackles’ pitch shows just how easily the mythology could accommodate one.
And maybe that’s the most frustrating part. After 15 seasons, Supernatural already built itself a perfect emergency button. All Jack would have to say is that something terrible is coming, and Sam and Dean would be back on the road. For a show that spent years refusing to let death stay permanent, that feels almost perfectly on brand.
