The ‘Will Of D’ Is Hereditary In ‘One Piece’
Our favorite character and the protagonist of the series Monkey D. Luffy is the best example of the bloodline ‘D’. He is the first with whom we meet and later learn more about the importance and mystery shrouded with the initial ‘D’. Many characters slowly get introduced who carry the mysterious ‘D’ in their name.
Amusingly enough, none of the characters with the initial knows the secret about it. Robin who is interested in learning about history obviously gets attracted to it. To her disappointment, Luffy has no answer to her question. It was Dr. Kureha who first stated that ‘so the Will of D lives…’. She seemed to know about it but doesn’t answer the question behind it.
The Poneglyphs seem to indicate the mystery behind the Void Century where a powerful kingdom ceased to exit and was eradicated from the pages of history. The people with ‘D’ in their name are connected to that kingdom. The only person with knowledge about the letter was Dolflamingo’s brother Donquixote Rocinante.

He said that the people with the initial ‘D’ are the natural enemies of the Gods. In ‘One Piece’, Gods have referred to the Celestial Dragons that the World Government is somehow hell-bent on protecting. And Luffy, our favorite character, punched a ‘God’ much to the viewer’s satisfaction. Anyways, back on topic, the people with the initials are heritors of achieving great things.
Till now, the characters with the ‘D’ who are introduced in the anime are – Gold D. Roger, Portgas D. Ace, Monkey D. Luffy, Monkey D. Garp, Monkey D. Dragon, Rocks D. Xebec, Marshall D. Teach, Jaguar D. Saul, Portgas D. Rouge, and Trafalgar D. Water Law. As these characters reach the Island Raftel, clues about the Void Century and the initial ‘D’ slowly come to unfold.

Characteristics Of People Carrying The Initial ‘D’
The ‘Will of D’ is supposedly carried through each generation. Once it was also stated that even if the World Government kills all people carrying the initial, the ‘Will’ will live on till their tasked work is accomplished. What that is, is yet to be unveiled. The characters possessing this initial, more or less have similar characteristics throughout the story.
They have a sense of adventure, freedom, loyalty towards their own, and a destiny to mark their name in history. It is also argued that these individuals carry a ‘Will’ that allows them to seek death, not vice versa. If they think it’s time to end their journey, or they have completed what they were supposed to accomplish, then they can die peacefully with a smiley face.
These individuals do not fear death and possess the power of Haki. Haki’s ultimate form can only be achieved by a limited few, and undoubtedly Luffy seems to be one of them. He is one of the strongest characters who carry his name with pride and has all the characteristics that an ultimate possessor of ‘d’ should have. As the story progresses we can hope to find out more about this mysterious letter ‘D’.
