The month of March, Women’s History Month is dedicated to celebrating the accomplishments and contributions that women from all walks of life have made to the history of the US, by honoring the pioneers of the fight for gender equality in the US.

The historic month started off as just International Women’s Day, as a way to remember the meeting of socialists and suffragists. Soon after, this was brought to an international conference, to commemorate working women. The conference was attended by 17 countries, and they all agreed to observe March 8th as International Women’s Day.

In 1911, the first-ever International Women’s Day was celebrated in Austria, Denmark, Switzerland and Germany.

A few decades later, however, the day gained popularity as a lot of countries came together to celebrate women on that day. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter declared March 8 was officially the start of Women’s History Month.

A few more years later, in 1987, Congress declared the entire month of March as Women’s History Month. Since then, the tradition has followed as we continue to celebrate women every March, every year.

As per the National Women’s History Alliance, the theme for this year is “Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.”

The official site reads, “The theme recognizes women throughout the country who understand that, for a positive future, we need to eliminate bias and discrimination entirely from our lives and institutions.”

“During 2024, we recognize the example of women who are committed to embracing everyone and excluding no one in our common quest for freedom and opportunity. They know that people change with the help of families, teachers and friends, and that young people in particular need to learn the value of hearing from different voices with different points of view as they grow up.”

It adds, “It takes courage for women to advocate for practical goals like equity, diversity and inclusion when established forces aim to misinterpret, exploit or discredit them. Throughout 2024, we honor local women from the past and present who have taken the lead to show the importance of change and to establish firmer safeguards, practices and legislation reflecting these values. Following decades of discrimination, we are proud to celebrate women who work for basic inclusion, equality and fairness.”
