Accidents are one of the leading causes of death and injuries in the world. Road accidents are the major reason for death among humans along with different diseases and syndromes. While many of these accidents are a result of the negligence of drivers and other passengers, accidents can also happen because of faulty mechanics in vehicles. Many bike and car accidents have been attributed to the flawed mechanics of a vehicle. More than 3,000 people are estimated to have been involved in road accidents every day. One such story is that of Molly Steinsapir.
Molly Steinsapir was a 12-year-old girl who suffered a terrible e-bike accident. As a result of the accident, she suffered from several brain injuries and succumbed to her injuries after multiple surgeries. Molly’s story was widely publicized and many came forward to extend their support to her and her family. Even celebrities extended help to her family. Her mother Kaye Allen even filed a lawsuit against the e-bike company. But what exactly happened with Molly?
How Did Molly Steinsapir Die?
Molly Steinsapir was the 12-year-old daughter of Kaye Steinsapir and Jon Steinsapir, distinguished lawyers from California. The couple has also represented the estate of Michael Jackson. Their daughter Molly was involved in an e-bike accident on January 31, 2021, which ultimately proved fatal for the youngster.
Molly was riding an e-bike along with her friend on Jan 31. The duo decided to ride the e-bike downhill wearing helmets when they had an accident. Her friend escaped with minimal injuries and flagged down a car for help. According to the friend, while riding downhill, “(the bike) began to wobble and shake, causing the bike to crash.”
Molly was immediately rushed to the UCLA medical center after the accident. There she underwent multiple surgeries on her injured brain and stayed for two weeks. During this time, no efforts could revive her, and she remained unconscious. After a lengthy battle, Molly died on February 15, 2021, with her family beside her.
During the hard two-week period while Molly was battling the injuries, her mother Kaye Steinsapir chronicled her battle online on Twitter. On the platform where she has more than 100k followers, she shared Molly’s story and the daily struggles of the family, hoping their daughter would finally wake up. Alas, the day never came, and the family was left heartbroken.

Molly’s story resonated with parents across the country and many of them hoped that the kid would make it and regain consciousness. When her parents revealed that their daughter was no more, there was an outpouring of love and empathy for the family. Parents sent their well-wishes to the Steinsapir family in the aftermath of the tragic accident.
In August 2022, Molly’s parents Kaye Steinsapir and Jon Steinsapir filed a lawsuit against the e-bike company that their daughter was riding on during the accident. They filed the lawsuit against Rad Power Bikes, a Seattle-based popular e-bike company stating the bikes have many structural and design defects. They have also complained about how the bikes aren’t appropriate and safe for kids and teenagers.
The lawsuit alleges that the bikes made by the company have multiple issues with wheels and brakes and that the company ignored these defects and chose to sell them to customers even after being aware of the major safety issues. The lawsuit even mentions how the manual has instructions stating that the bikes are suitable for people who are 18+ and yet the company markets them for kids and teens.
Rad Power Bikes has expressed condolences to Molly Steinsapir and her family after the incident. But they are yet to comment on the lawsuit. In early 2023, the court approved a $1.5 million settlement between Molly’s parents and her friend’s parents. However, Rad Power Bikes has opposed the decision and filed a cross-complaint against the friend’s family. If all the parties don’t settle, the next hearing will be in October 2023.
