One of the greatest movie twist endings of all time, a stunning revelation transformed ‘The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari‘ (1920) into a masterpiece of psychological horror. What seemed like a stroke of genius turned out to be a radical act of studio betrayal. What began as a highly political, anti-authoritarian statement became a movie about individual derangement.
The original screenplay of the movie was a direct criticism of the ruling class and those individuals in power who misused their positions. Both Carl Mayer and Hans Janowitz drew heavily on their experiences of living in pre-World War I Germany when writing the original screenplay. However, producers later modified many of its ideas.
The Twist Redefined Horror Storytelling Of ‘The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari’

The writers were particularly disturbed by the idea of people’s blind obedience. To reflect this concern, they used the sinister asylum director, Dr. Caligari, as a representation of a corrupt and authoritarian system.
According to the original screenplay, Dr. Caligari was a manipulative figure who used the sleepwalker Cesare to carry out a series of murders. In the released version, a mentally unstable patient imagines the crimes, whereas the original script portrayed Dr. Caligari as the mastermind behind them.

The ending underwent a significant change. In the original version of the story, Caligari’s crimes were eventually exposed, leading to his downfall—a stark contrast to the finished film.
The story, as originally written, intended to reinforce the writers’ anti-authoritarian message by portraying the asylum’s director as a corrupt figure who abused his position of power for sinister ends.
The film’s strong political themes come as little surprise, as its scriptwriters belonged to a generation that lived through the horrors of World War I and other atrocities. Therefore, their works reflected their attitude toward those events.
How Producers Changed Caligari

Before the official release of ‘The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari‘, the producers made several changes that distorted the film’s original intent. They added a frame narrative to the story, completely altering its ending.

The film opens with a man named Francis recounting the terrible events that have shaped his life and accusing several people of wrongdoing. The main story then unfolds, but the ending reveals that Francis had fabricated much of what he described.
Namely, we see Francis in the asylum where the doctors say that all the people he accused of various wrongdoings were actually respectable members of the community. As a result, all murders turned out to happen solely in the imagination of Francis, who suffers from paranoia.
Consequently, Dr. Caligari, who was initially presented as a manipulative murderer in charge of the asylum, is now the respectable director of the institution.
The revelation transformed the film from a straightforward tale of evil into a psychologically complex nightmare. In doing so, it helped lay the foundation for modern horror, proving that the human mind could be just as terrifying as any monster.
