Gary Oldman has shared his thoughts on HBO’s upcoming ‘Harry Potter‘ television series, and the former Sirius Black actor seems excited about the new adaptation.

While reflecting on the reboot, Oldman explained why he believes the longer television format could finally bring many missing details from J.K. Rowling’s books to the screen.

The ‘Harry Potter‘ franchise is preparing for a major return with HBO’s planned television adaptation. Unlike the movies, which had to fit each story into a limited runtime, the new series will dedicate an entire season to each of J.K. Rowling’s seven books.

That approach is exactly what excites Gary Oldman. The actor, who played Sirius Black in the film series, recently revealed that he has already seen promotional material for the project and likes what he has seen so far.

I’ve seen a trailer for it, and I think it’s a great idea,” Oldman says to the LA Times. “They’re doing the whole book, which I love, because there were a lot of wonderful things, fabric and character detail, we had to lose for the sake of telling the story in two hours.”

Oldman believes the television format gives the creative team a chance to include many details that films simply could not fit in. Characters, relationships, and smaller story elements that were trimmed from the movies may finally get the attention they deserve in the new adaptation.

As excitement builds around the reboot, some fans have wondered whether actors from the original films could make appearances in the new series. Oldman, however, does not believe that is likely.

I don’t think they want any of us from the movies contaminating or muddying the waters,” Oldman says, pleasantly. “Besides, I’m too old.” Even so, the topic of age in Hollywood is changing rapidly because modern technology can now make actors appear much younger on screen. That led Oldman to share his thoughts on AI and digital de-aging technology.

Oldman admitted that the rapid development of AI leaves him uncertain about where the industry is heading. “I don’t know where we’re going with it because it seems to advance every week,” Oldman says.

For the veteran actor, the human element remains the most important part of filmmaking. As AI continues to evolve, he hopes actors never become completely replaceable.
