JK Rowling’s ‘Harry Potter‘ saga is one of the most beloved movie franchises of all time, and for good reason. While the series is filled with iconic characters, audiences often credit the main leads.
However, several characters failed to become popular in the movies despite being strongly written in the books. Join us as we take a look at some characters who were commendably portrayed in the books but are not remembered for the right reasons in the film series.
10. James Potter

The ‘Harry Potter’ film series does shed some light on the relationship between Harry and his father, but much of it remains unexplored.
The movies avoid getting into the Marauders as a group and also fail to showcase many of James Potter’s flashbacks. Additionally, the series portrays James Potter as much older than he was in the books, as Harry’s father was only 21 when he died.

9. Frank and Alice Longbottom

While you can make a case that Neville Longbottom is shown in a crucial role in the epic climax of the movie series, his parents, Frank and Alice Longbottom, are briefly shown throughout the series.
In the books, however, their story is explored in greater depth, including a heartbreaking scene in ‘Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix‘. In this scene, Harry, Hermione, and Ron visit St. Mungo’s and find Neville and his grandmother visiting Frank and Alice. Neville’s parents were tortured into sanity during the First Wizarding War.
8. The Bloody Baron

While the movies offer only a mere glimpse of Bloody Baron as the ghost of Slytherin House, the books tell a whole other story.
Bloody Baron is the only ghost that the Hogwarts students feared and is a dark character in the books. His appearance shows him covered in the blood of Helena Ravenclaw, the daughter of the Ravenclaw House’s founder.
7. Percy Weasley

Weasley is portrayed as a dutiful character in the initial films, but is not used much afterward. However, in the books, he is portrayed as deeply loyal to the Ministry of Magic.
It creates a significant rift between him and his family. His character arc is never shown in the films and is a major miss throughout the series.
6. Dobby

As one of the most important characters throughout the film series and the books, many believe Dobby should have had more screen time.
Although the films do showcase him in crucial roles, his appearances are largely limited to ‘Chamber of Secrets‘ and ‘Deathly Hallows: Part 1‘. In the books, however, Dobby has appeared in various subplots.

5. Severus Snape

Yes, Severus Snape might be the best character throughout the ‘Harry Potter‘ series, but his portrayal in the books is far more intense.
While the films do justice to his character, they fail to fully capture his cruelty. The book depicts him as a cruel and strict teacher who constantly humiliates his students.
4. Ginny Weasley

The film version of Ginny Weasley is far different from her character in the books. Shown as sweet and kind-hearted in the films, the books showcase Ginny as daring and sarcastic.
While there seems to be nothing wrong with her on-screen portrayal, fans expected to see what they read in the books.
3. Remus Lupin

Lupin was one of the darkest characters in the ‘Harry Potter‘ books. He had very little left to hold on to, having already lost his support and friendships.
Despite being one of the most profound wizards, he was largely sidelined from the wizarding society. A lot could have been adapted in the films, but unfortunately, that wasn’t the case.
2. Draco Malfoy

He remains one of the finest written characters in the books. He transitioned from being a spoiled boy who disrespected blood traitors to becoming a crucial part of Voldemort’s end.
However, the film series failed to showcase this side of Draco Malfoy, and maybe the upcoming HBO TV series will develop this arc.
1. Albus Dumbledore

Many have pointed out how the ‘Harry Potter’ film series showcased a volatile and aggressive performance of Dumbledore in several sequences. On the other hand, the books portrayed him in a much more settled space.
The films also skipped Dumbledore’s youth and his tragic past with Gellert Grindelwald. While Michael Gambon and Richard Harris played the role brilliantly, the sudden change also made the character look a bit stale towards the end.
