Chris Hemsworth‘s Thor has gone through one of the biggest tonal transformations in the MCU. He began as a proud, Shakespearean warrior, became a more emotionally complicated hero, and then leaned heavily into comedy in ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ and ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’.
Hemsworth has previously suggested that if he returned, he would want the character to feel drastically different rather than simply repeat what had already been done. Now, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ appears to be taking that idea seriously.
Chris Hemsworth Wants Thor To Feel Different Again

Joe Russo has confirmed that the film is returning to the version of Thor seen in ‘Infinity War’, a warrior who has lost almost everything and is searching for meaning through battle. After playing Thor for so many years, Hemsworth has seen practically every side of the character. That makes his comments about reinvention especially important.

He has previously explained that when the role starts feeling too familiar, there is a risk of becoming lazy with it. So, he naturally wanted a drastically different version if he returned. That change now seems to be happening.
Instead of pushing Thor further into comedy, ‘Doomsday’ appears to be pulling him back toward the serious warrior audiences saw in ‘Infinity War’. And honestly, it feels like a natural direction after everything Thor has endured.
‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Is Bringing Back The Warrior

Joe Russo recently described the version of Thor the filmmakers wanted, saying they were specifically carrying forward the warrior version. He described Thor as someone who has lost everything and is trying to find meaning through battle. That description fits Thor’s journey surprisingly well.

He has lost his family, his home, Loki, Asgard, and countless battles, while ‘Endgame’ left him struggling to understand who he was after failing to stop Thanos. ‘Love and Thunder’ eventually pushed him toward another chapter, but ‘Doomsday’ appears ready to bring some of that weight back.
The rumored connection to the comic-book Unworthy Thor storyline remains unconfirmed, so it is better treated as speculation rather than established plot. Still, the larger shift is real. Marvel is putting Thor against Doctor Doom, and Russo has already teased that this will be his journey against the greatest foe he has faced.
For Hemsworth, that could mean something more interesting than simply making Thor serious again. It could mean finally giving the character a reason to fight that goes beyond another joke or another cosmic adventure.
