Bucky’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ Fate Could Explain Steve Choosing Sam Over Him In ‘Endgame’

Steve Rogers handing the Captain America shield to Sam Wilson at the end of ‘Avengers: Endgame’ remains one of the MCU’s most meaningful passing-of-the-torch moments. Now, a darker fan theory gives that decision an entirely different meaning.

Steve May Have Known Bucky Wasn’t the Future In ‘Endgame’

The obvious choice might have been Bucky Barnes. Bucky was Steve’s oldest friend, had fought alongside him during World War II, and eventually became a hero in his own right. Yet Steve deliberately chose Sam. According to the theory, Steve may have known something Bucky didn’t: his closest friend wouldn’t have much time left.

Of course, this is not confirmed by Marvel, and the idea depends heavily on rumored leaks and alleged concept art surrounding ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. Still, if Bucky’s reported fate turns out to be real, Steve’s decision becomes much more heartbreaking in retrospect.

Steve’s choice of Sam makes sense even without the theory. Bucky spent much of his life being controlled and manipulated, and becoming Captain America could have tied him even more strongly to the identity of Steve Rogers. Sam was different.

He had already demonstrated the qualities Steve valued: compassion, courage, humility, and a willingness to stand up for people without needing recognition. Steve wasn’t simply looking for someone strong enough to carry the shield. He was looking for someone who understood what the shield represented.

However, if Steve somehow knew Bucky’s future, his decision could have been even more deliberate. Rather than giving Bucky a legacy that might end almost immediately, Steve could have chosen Sam because he believed Sam was capable of carrying Captain America’s ideals forward.

The theory becomes especially interesting because Bucky is expected to play an important role in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. Rumors and alleged leaked material have circulated suggesting that his story could end with his death. If that happens, Steve’s decision in ‘Endgame‘ would suddenly feel almost prophetic.

Imagine Steve returning from his life with Peggy, knowing that the friend he grew up with still had a final battle ahead of him. Instead of giving Bucky the shield, he gives it to Sam, someone who can continue the legacy after Bucky is gone.

It would also make Steve’s goodbye even more emotional. Nothing in ‘Endgame’ confirms that Steve knew Bucky would die, so this remains a fan theory. However, if ‘Doomsday’ really gives Bucky a tragic ending, fans may look back at that quiet shield-passing scene very differently.

Maybe Steve wasn’t choosing between his two best friends. Maybe he was choosing who he believed could carry Captain America into the future.
