‘Game of Thrones‘ star Kit Harington added another major franchise to his resume in 2021 with a role in Marvel’s ‘Eternals‘. However, the film failed to live up to expectations at the box office, and its planned sequel was canceled. In a recent interview, Harington opened up about taking on the role and his brief time in the MCU.
Harington played Dane Whitman, a human who would eventually become the heroic Black Knight, in a mid-credits scene setting up his future in the franchise. While ‘Eternals‘ introduced many new cosmic characters, it was met with mixed reviews and became one of Marvel’s lowest-grossing movies, thanks to post-Endgame superhero fatigue.

Kit Harington On Deciding To Join MCU
When asked about why he chose to join Marvel in an interview with GQ, Harington was candid. “I’m not gonna pretend I took that [role] because it was different and interesting. If Marvel calls, you gotta do it,” he admitted. While he enjoyed his character and the world of Eternals, box office success was not guaranteed for such an experimental film in the MCU.
Although his role was small, Harington took the time to learn about Black Knight and his potential future in the universe. “I liked my character and would be interested to return if they changed their mind. I did a bit of reading up on who he was in the comics,” he said. Black Knight is an armored hero who wields the mystical Ebony Blade, and Harington seemed interested in exploring that aspect of the character.

Moving On From Big Franchises
On the supposed cancellation of the ‘Eternals‘ sequel, Harington noted it was disappointing but understandable given the film’s performance. “I’m aware that anything I say now is in context of me getting my bare arse out on Industry” he joked. While open to returning, he has moved on from counting on the MCU for steady work. “These things happen. I just take jobs that interest me now and see what the future brings” Harington remarked.
When asked if he was seeking shorter commitments after ‘Game Of Thrones‘ and ‘Eternals‘, Harington said, “I might have been one of those people less keen now because of the time away. But I’m happy to keep working, doing things I find interesting and staying close to my family“. While big franchises made him a star, Harington’s priorities now lie elsewhere and his future projects seem to lie outside the MCU or screen adaptations of George R.R. Martin’s fantasy world.
