Jennifer Lawrence may have fond memories of playing Mystique in Fox’s X-Men franchise, but there is one part of the experience she would rather never repeat. The Oscar-winning actress has opened up about the physically exhausting process of transforming into the blue-skinned mutant, revealing just how much the role demanded from her.
Spending Eight Hours In The Makeup Chair Became Too Much For Jennifer Lawrence

Lawrence portrayed Mystique in four X-Men films between 2011 and 2019, beginning with ‘X-Men: First Class’. While the character became one of the franchise’s most recognizable faces, bringing her to life required hours of makeup, body paint, and glue. Now, Lawrence has made it clear that the experience was far less glamorous than it might have appeared.

During an interview with Allure, Lawrence explained that performing stunts was easily her favorite part of playing Mystique. Working alongside stunt performer Renee Moneymaker, whom she also knew from ‘The Hunger Games’, made the experience particularly enjoyable. However, the extensive makeup process was another story entirely.
“My least favorite part was most certainly the paint,” Lawrence admitted. The actress recalled how the transformation required approximately eight hours in the makeup chair during the production of ‘X-Men: First Class’. Speaking on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Lawrence jokingly talked about enduring the ordeal.
“I am a hero. No one will understand what I went through.” Her preparation even began before she secured the role. For Mystique’s screen test, Lawrence had to dye her hair multiple colors in a single day, including red, brown, black, and blonde. She revealed that the repeated coloring permanently damaged her hair.
Could She Ever Play Mystique Again?

With the Marvel multiverse creating opportunities for familiar characters to return, fans may wonder whether Lawrence could reprise her role someday. Unfortunately for anyone hoping to see her blue transformation again, the actress isn’t exactly enthusiastic about the prospect.

When asked whether she would consider undergoing heavy prosthetic work again, Lawrence responded, “Never say never, but absolutely fucking not.” She also described the experience as a lot. It resulted in sleep deprivation and reaching her breaking point.
While Lawrence enjoyed Mystique’s physical performances, her comments make it clear that superhero transformations are not easy. While it may look good on screen, the BTS says something entirely different.
