Matt Murdock has lost nearly everything by the end of ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ season 2. He is imprisoned after revealing his identity to expose Wilson Fisk’s corruption.

It’s a big change for the street-level corner of the MCU, and, come to think of it, it sets up some of Daredevil’s most intense comic storylines.

The most obvious inspiration is The Devil in Cell-Block D. In this story, Matt fights to survive in prison after his name is leaked. The end of the first episode already showed signs of this as he was put in the same prison as some of the former members of the Anti-Vigilante Task Force who were loyal to Fisk.

That’s enough to make for a hazardous situation, particularly for Matt, who has a lot of enemies. The idea is even more exciting because of the increasing prospect of the Defenders’ reunion. Marvel could finally bring back the comic format in which Daredevil’s Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and Jessica Jones temporarily patrolled Hell’s Kitchen while Daredevil was away.

It’s emotional to see Matt behind bars, and the rest of the heroes trying to take on his responsibilities. It forces him into a vulnerable position rarely seen in the MCU.

The Daredevil comics written by Chip Zdarsky may also be a major inspiration for Season 3, especially the Doing Time and Lockdown story arcs. Those arcs included Matt being jailed and Elektra taking over as Daredevil. With Elodie Yung rumored to be returning to the part, it suddenly seems like it’s entirely feasible that the MCU could be heading down a similar path.

Meanwhile, The Hand is making a comeback that no one can ignore. The ninja organization has already been confirmed for ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’. The film’s teaser even included scenes of a prison fight. The overlap is too specific to be a coincidence.

Born Again’ season 3 and Spider-Man may have connected stories. Meanwhile, Fisk’s exile probably won’t last long either. The season finale’s eerie beach scenes were a clear nod to the Return of the King theme of Fisk’s comeback from a loss of power. The show’s earlier episodes featured the same elements.

The best part of all of this is that Marvel’s grounded heroes are once again feeling connected. The street-level side of the MCU suddenly feels like one big story, rather than a bunch of Disney+ projects.
