‘VisionQuest’ could be setting up something far more unsettling than another artificial intelligence controlling a powerful body. Ultron‘s appearance in Vision’s life and his actions throughout the series suggest he may be playing a long game.

And if that’s the case, Vision may have made a huge mistake by trusting him. The clues are distributed throughout multiple episodes, and they all paint a troubling picture of what Ultron’s endgame may be.

Ultron May Have Been Manipulating Vision From the Start

The first is in Episode 1 when Ultron tells Paladin where Vision is in Edinburgh. This is a sequence of events that indirectly results in the death of the restaurant owner Fiona. The incident could be a bad effect of Ultron’s actions, but it does leave one wondering if he knew exactly what would happen.

Ultron might have known that Vision would not be able to react to the situation as a human would, allowing him to exploit the consequences without immediately exposing his larger intentions. Another interesting hint is given in Episode 3.

When Jocasta hacks Vision’s mind, it affects several characters, but Ultron doesn’t seem to be affected. This may indicate that his architecture or capabilities are fundamentally distinct from other AIs. That distinction matters.

Ultron wasn’t just a standard assistant program that was supposed to obey commands. He has his own worldview and has shown time and time again his willingness to pursue it, despite the consequences, unlike JARVIS, FRIDAY, or E.D.I.T.H.

Taking Vision’s Body Could Be Only The Beginning

By Episode 4, Ultron appears to have gained Vision’s trust, convincing him to give up his body. The true horror is when Ultron will not relinquish that control. It’s a chilling development, as Vision’s move seems to be based on trust. Rather than facing a clear and present danger, he lets an old familiar intelligence into the very thing that makes him who he is.

What if it wasn’t Ultron’s ultimate goal to have Vision? Vision’s body might give Ultron powers, memories, and opportunities that he wouldn’t be able to get on his own. If he’s looking for more than just survival, then control could be just what he needs to carry out a much bigger plan.
