Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has left a tantalizing hint on the next direction of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Feige’s recent comments don’t imply a complete overhaul of the franchise with ‘Avengers: Secret Wars‘.
Instead, they suggest a new start that will take into account all that has gone before. That’s good news for longtime MCU fans.
Marvel Could Be Building A New MCU Without Erasing The Old One
Feige recently said in an interview that he was inspired by Jonathan Hickman’s highly successful Secret Wars comic for the upcoming movie. The statement immediately grabbed fans’ attention, as the 2015 comic ends with a soft reboot instead of a fresh start of the Marvel Universe.

“I look to the comics as I always do in terms of our storytelling, both the Secret Wars, but particularly in the Jonathan Hickman ‘Secret Wars’ from 10 years ago, there’s a nice roadmap to where we can go.”
The comic is not about erasing old narratives, but rather about reimagining the world and its inhabitants. It enables characters from alternate realities to live in the same universe. It brings a breath of fresh air to the status quo, but also retains a lot of the history that readers had already invested in.
If Marvel Studios follows suit, ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ could change the MCU forever without having to bid goodbye to everything since Iron Man first appeared in 2008.
A Soft Reboot May Lead The Way To Marvel’s Next Era
Such an ending would also solve one of Marvel’s biggest creative challenges. The Multiverse Saga has created so many alternate universes, legacy characters, and variants. However, eventually, the franchise should have a streamlined universe for future stories to be developed naturally.

A soft reboot would give just that chance. It might also enable characters like the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and perhaps other heroes from other worlds to be a permanent part of the MCU’s main timeline. This would make the universe bigger and not just different.
Most important of all, it would not involve the risks of a hard reboot. For years, fans have been following the adventures of heroes like Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, Thor and Captain America. Keeping those emotional links intact, while adding a new generation of heroes, would be the best of both worlds for Marvel.
