One of the most intriguing lines in the ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ trailer is Doctor Doom telling the heroes, “You have all lived stolen lives.” At first glance, it seems to be another threat from Doom. However, the characters displayed around the line might indicate a more personal, and possibly more sinister, story.

Steve Rogers, Thor, Loki and the Fantastic Four are all shown as Doom delivers the line, and there may be a connection between them: each has somehow escaped the life they were originally destined to live. And the most obvious example is Steve Rogers.

Steve gives back the Infinity Stones and decides to stay in the past, eventually living with Peggy Carter. Rather than live a life of loneliness, Steve decides to take the happiness that he has always desired. Thor also gets something that he lost. Following Gorr’s death, Love returns to his life through the final wish, providing Thor with a new purpose after years of grief.

Loki’s tale is even more complex. He avoids a destiny that was set for him, gives up his life and becomes the God of Stories, a role that alters his relationship with the multiverse. Then there are the Fantastic Four, who live in a different universe, but also have their own history. Each of these stories is of second chances. Together, however, they could represent something Doom considers unforgivable.

That’s why the second half of Doom’s statement is even more interesting: “But now you must give them back.” If that’s the case, Doom is not just saying that the heroes cheated death. He might think that each changed destiny has repercussions in another universe.

Steve met Peggy and married her. Thor got Love. Loki managed to avoid his doom. Other worlds created other heroes and events. Doom may see those victories as stolen from reality itself. That might make him a lot more of a threat than a mere revenge seeker.

He might be doing something to right the wrongs. The scary thing is that Doom may not feel that he’s taking away the happiness of these heroes. He might think he’s reclaiming what they never were entitled to. If “stolen lives” is what he’s referring to, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ could turn the heroes’ greatest victories into the very things Doom uses against them.
