In the recent adventures of Thor, the franchise has been very heavy-handed with humor, to the point of sacrificing depth. Now, we have an unexpected voice, proposing a new direction to take.
Kenneth Branagh, who began the journey of the God of Thunder with ‘Thor’, thinks that it may be time to give the hero something that means much more to him: a true ending.
Kenneth Branagh Envisions ‘Thor 5’ As A More Emotional, Final Chapter

Branagh has recently suggested a way to take Thor in a more ‘Logan’-inspired direction, a story that would be less focused on spectacle and more on its emotional impact. It is not about depriving the fantasy, but of placing it in something human. And, frankly, that could be just what Thor requires at the moment.

“Part of me would love to finish my relationship with that character. I’d always wanted to do more and indeed had a couple of ideas, more in the territory of James Mangold’s brilliant Logan. I would love to see Chris Hemsworth and the others have their own individual final story that takes Thor into a glorious twilight,” he told BI.
Following the chaotic ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ and the polarizing tone of ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’, the character is long overdue for change. The humor had its effect, until it did not. What seemed to be refreshing at first began to undermine the stakes. Thor, who has lost his family, his home, and much of his identity, had become harder to take seriously.
Now, Branagh’s vision is a clue to the possibility of balancing that out. Thor would not just be able to revisit his past with another comedy; he would have to confront his past. Such a story might restore the seriousness that characterized his initial appearances, and still do justice to the distance that he has travelled.
Marvel Has A Chance To Fix Thor’s Tonal Problem

What makes this concept even more appealing is the fact that Chris Hemsworth himself has stated that he would like to take Thor in a more serious direction. Such a fit between actor and original director is not something that Marvel should overlook.

For over a decade, Hemsworth has played the role, growing with the franchise. He has dealt with drama, cosmic adventure, and full-blown comedy. However, what he has not had, at least not to the full extent of it, is a final closing chapter. Not a follow-up, but a story that feels like an end.
As Marvel Studios continues to expand its Multiverse Saga and beyond, the time may in fact be right. Big crossover events will always deliver spectacle, but standalone character-driven stories are what give those moments weight. A more down-to-earth ‘Thor 5’ would not only be a tonal shift but a statement.
