Marvel fans love a good mystery, and ‘VisionQuest’ has already given them plenty to speculate about. The series introduces a mysterious Client who hires mercenary Paladin to track down White Vision, immediately raising questions about who could possibly want him captured.
Naturally, theories have connected the shadowy figure to some of the MCU’s biggest names, including Billy Maximoff and Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom. However, showrunner Terry Matalas has now shut down both possibilities. He revealed the real answer might be more closely tied to Vision’s personal story than fans expect.
‘VisionQuest’ Discards Two Major MCU Characters

In an interview with New Rockstars, Matalas directly addressed speculation surrounding the Client’s identity, confirming that Wanda Maximoff’s son isn’t pulling the strings behind the bounty. “It’s not Billy,” the showrunner clarified, before warning fans against expecting another elaborate supernatural mystery like with Mephisto in ‘WandaVision’.
“It’s not that kind of story,” Matalas added. He made it clear that the Client’s identity is important without encouraging viewers to obsess over every possible cameo. The showrunner also confirmed that Doctor Doom isn’t the mysterious employer, ruling out an immediate connection to ‘Avengers: Doomsday’.
While this doesn’t mean ‘VisionQuest’ won’t contribute to the MCU’s larger narrative, it suggests the series has a more self-contained mystery to resolve. And honestly, that’s probably the right move. Vision’s journey toward understanding his identity deserves room to breathe without everything leading directly to the next Avengers movie.
Who Could Be Behind The Bounty On White Vision?

With Billy and Doom eliminated, several intriguing candidates remain. Sharon Carter, now operating as the Power Broker, could be a possibility given her criminal connections and the show’s apparent links to Madripoor. Xu Xialing, who took control of the Ten Rings organization after ‘Shang-Chi’, is another potential suspect worth considering.

However, the most compelling possibility might be Ultron himself. James Spader’s returning villain has already revealed Vision’s location to Paladin, claiming his actions were intended to push Vision toward evolution. Yet, considering Ultron’s history of manipulation and his complicated relationship with Vision, taking that explanation at face value would be a mistake.
Matalas hasn’t revealed the answer, and that uncertainty is precisely what makes the mystery interesting. Rather than relying on a shocking cameo, ‘VisionQuest’ may deliver a reveal that directly challenges Vision’s understanding of himself, his creator, and the artificial intelligence living inside his mind.
