Marvel’s Quantum Realm Explained
In simple words, Quantum Realm is a ruleless, logicless, and timeless place, which exists only at a micro-level. It is a dimension in the multiverse that can only be accessed through Pym particles or a Quantum Tunnel. Even in ‘Ant-Man‘, Hank Pym describes the Quantum Realm as “A reality where all concepts of time and space become irrelevant as you shrink for all eternity.” The producer of Marvel Studios’ Stephen Broussard added, “The Quantum Realm is a world unto itself not unlike Asgard or Wakanda”.
Scientist Doctor Hank Pym found access to the Quantum Realm with the help of Pym particles. Pym’s wife, Janet van Dyne was the first person to bear the mantle of the Wasp and travel through the Quantum Realm. She sacrificed her life while disabling a Soviet nuclear missile and hence got trapped in it, until ‘Ant-man and the Wasp‘. In the post-credits scene of the film, Scott Lang got stuck in the Quantum Realm, while Thanos’ snap decimated almost everyone including Hank Pym and his family.
Quantum Realm plays a very important role in helping Avengers eliminate Thanos. An accidental alteration of time brought Scott Lang back from the realm, only to realize not five hours but five years had passed. Along with the Avengers, Lang builds a Quantum Tunnel to go back in time to steal the Infinity stones in order to destroy Thanos. The Avengers spilt up and traverse the Quantum Realm to different time zones to retrieve the six infinity stones. After the battle, Steve Rogers travels back in time to return each Infinity stone to their respective timelines. It also makes a perfect prison, as Kang the Conqueror finds himself trapped inside it.
