Which ‘Moon Knight’ Character Will Have Their Comic Debut?

After the interlude from the Phase Three, the Marvel Cinematic Universe brought forth some memorable new characters to the mainstream in Phase Four. It started with the Elizabeth Olsen-starrer ‘WandaVision.’ The phase concluded with James Gunn’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy: Holiday Special.’ However, one of the best entries in the universe was that of Moon Knight.

‘Moon Knight’ debuted in March 2022 on Disney+. The Oscar Isaac-starrer told the story of Steven Grant, an individual with Dissociative Personality Disorder. Superheroes have been represented with their alter ego being the powerful one. Likewise, Steven Grant’s alter ego, Marc Spector, was the brave, courageous one. They aim to attain a Scarab which is with the evil Arthur Harrow. In this journey, May Calamawy’s Layla El-Faouly helps Steven navigate when she attains superpowers and becomes the Scarlet Scarab. Now, Marvel Comics will debut a series focusing on Layla.

In the series ‘Moon Knight,’ we saw Layla El-Faouly turn into the Scarlet Scarab in the sixth episode, where she goes to take revenge against Arthur Harrow. But, if she wants to bind Ammit, she has to have two avatars. One is the friendly Hippo, Taweret. And the other one is the Scarlet Scarab. Scarlet Scarab debuted in Marvel Comics in 1977 with a male, Abdul Faoul, donning the superhero costume. But Scarlet Scarab disappeared after its debut and made a comeback in ‘The Mighty Thor’ issue.

Marvel, in some cases, has introduced a character on TV or celluloid before the comics. It includes Firestar, Chloe Sullivan from ‘Smallville,’ and Batgirl. Now, after a stellar performance and audience response, Marvel will bring May Calamawy’s Layla into the comic universe.

Layla El-Faouly will debut in July with ‘Moon Knight #25,’ before her miniseries. Layla is portrayed as a member of the mercenary group Karnak Cowboys, which has members including Marc Spector. Alessandro Vitti, Alessandro Cappuccio, Doug Moench, and Bill Sienkiewicz are contributing as writers to the comic. Layla will be transformed into a new avatar of Scarlet Scarab throughout the five-issue miniseries.

Jed Mackay, a Freelance Writer and Comic Books creator for Marvel, has weighed in on what will the new comic unfold for the ‘Moon Knight’ fans. He said, “Bringing Layla El-Faouly into our story was exciting. Adding an already beloved character into the universe of the comics is a really interesting opportunity, and being able to show the ‘before’ to David and Marcelo’s ‘after’ was a wonderful bit of synchronicity.”

Jed continued, “It was an idea that we both came to independently, and the way our stories were able to dovetail is something that I’m looking forward to people experiencing. While the Scarlet Scarab will indeed be turning up in Moon Knight: City of the Dead, in Moon Knight #25 we’re seeing a much younger Layla and a much younger Marc Spector as they embark on a mission as members of the crack mercenary team, the Karnak Cowboys.”
