Failure to find a great lead performer is why a multimillion-dollar movie production can simply grind to a halt. As in the case of a sports-themed biographical movie, Ron Howard‘s ‘Rush,’ which depends on the explosive chemistry of two historical sports opponents, Niki Lauda and James Hunt, the failure to find an adequate actor can destroy the movie’s entire plot. The inability to find the right man for Hunt made the international search for talent the most pressing issue in the movie’s pre-production stage, and almost pushed even an experienced two-time Oscar winner, Howard, to quit the project forever.

Derailing A Racing Biopic Over James Hunt
Back in the 2010s, Howard began working on the script for the movie, which would tell the story of the 1976 Formula One season and feature a fierce rivalry between drivers Niki Lauda and James Hunt.
Even though director Ron Howard had already cast German actor Daniel Brühl as Niki Lauda, finding the perfect actor to play Hunt proved nearly impossible. Numerous auditions yielded no results because none of the candidates could capture the required charm.

As time passed, Howard grew discouraged by the situation and considered canceling the entire production, since it would be impossible to continue.
The director had previously fought to cast actors in his vision, having chosen Tom Hanks for ‘Splash’ and Russell Crowe for ‘A Beautiful Mind,’ but he refused to move forward with a less-than-ideal actor.
“The James Hunt casting threatened to derail the movie. Looking at the list, seeing who was available, thinking about it, there was no one who was fitting the mould as well as Daniel did for Niki, and my heart began to sink,” Howard confessed.

However, when Hemsworth made the decision to take control of his acting future in a hotel room in Albuquerque, the entire direction of the movie would shift.
Realizing that the physique and charisma he possessed were reminiscent of James Hunt’s, and desperate to showcase the dramatic talent that extended beyond the green screens of Marvel, Hemsworth had his wife shoot an off-the-cuff audition tape to send to Ron Howard.
Howard was so impressed by the unconventional audition tape that months of uncertainty immediately faded into insignificance, as Howard remarked that “suddenly, it was done.” Without Hemsworth’s proactive nature, there is no question that the film would not have survived.

Even though the film handed Hemsworth one of the most creatively fulfilling and critically acclaimed roles of his career, his portrayal of Hunt irritated several people close to the real-life story.
Freddie Hunt, the late driver’s son, publicly blasted Hollywood’s version of his father’s legacy, stating flatly that the superhero veteran “basically played Dad like a t—.”
However, despite criticism from those closest to the source material, Hemsworth’s high-octane role proved vital in crafting the cinematic sports masterpiece.
