At a time when her career was taking off, and cameras followed her everywhere, Jamie Lynn Spears made a surprising decision. Instead of staying in Hollywood after becoming pregnant at 16, the ‘Zoey 101‘ star packed up and moved to rural Mississippi.

The move was not about giving up her career. It was about protecting her daughter and escaping the intense media attention that surrounded her pregnancy. Looking back on that chapter of her life, Spears has revealed why she chose what she called “the middle of nowhere”.

Speaking in a new interview with PEOPLE alongside her daughter Maddie, Spears recalled how her pregnancy forced her to think beyond her career and focus on real-life responsibilities. It was when she truly understood the weight of a decision.

Whenever I became pregnant, that was the first time that I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, this is a real-life decision. This isn’t just some work decision I’m making,'” Spears said.

The actress admitted that she was already worried about how the situation would affect her family. At the same time, she struggled with the public reaction to her pregnancy. Spears explained, “And I was already scared. And I knew how embarrassing and far from ideal this was for everyone. So to have that decision be so scrutinized. I wasn’t telling anybody what they should or shouldn’t do with their body. I was just saying, ‘This is what I have to do for me. This is what I want to do.’

As criticism mounted, Spears felt the pressure everywhere she went. She recalled being called “The biggest letdown in the world” after deciding to continue her pregnancy. “It was on every big news station, everywhere I went. And I was like, ‘Okay, thanks, guys. I know. Can you not?’ And that would never fly today. People would be absolutely canceled for saying those things.”

With the spotlight becoming increasingly difficult to handle, Spears decided to leave Hollywood behind. Rather than remain in California, she headed to Mississippi, seeking privacy and a fresh start for herself and her growing family. Explaining the move, Spears said, “I moved to the middle of nowhere — actually, Mississippi, even in the further middle of nowhere, ’cause I didn’t want to be around the paparazzi and that stuff.”

Although she hoped the move would bring peace, the media attention did not disappear overnight. Spears revealed that photographers still tracked her movements despite her new surroundings. “That didn’t stop. There was at least, like, 15 to 20 paparazzi [that] followed me everywhere I went in the middle of nowhere.”

Even so, living away from Hollywood helped her focus on what mattered most. The actress said becoming a mother changed her perspective and made her priorities clearer than ever before. Spears explained that having Maddie helped her understand the importance of protecting a child from negativity and public judgment. She wanted to build a life that would make her daughter proud.

It just kind of made it more clear like what I wanted to do,” Spears said. “An innocent child is being brought into the world. Whether she knows it or not, we should have some care about what we’re saying about the future of other people’s children. And to me that was important. I wanted her to have a mom she was proud of.”

The actress worked hard to give Maddie a childhood that felt as normal as possible. Looking back, Spears believes she may have gone a little too far in that effort. “I feel like I overdid it in some ways because I wanted her to have such a normal childhood,” she explained. “Sometimes I probably overextended that.” Still, growing up in a famous family led to some funny moments.
