It is almost impossible to imagine ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl’ without Orlando Bloom as Will Turner. Alongside Johnny Depp, Keira Knightley, and Geoffrey Rush, Bloom helped make the film’s cast one of the most iconic in movie history.
Surprisingly, Bloom wasnโt the first actor in contention for the role. One of the final contenders was Heath Ledger, who would later become famous for his Oscar-winning performance as the Joker. However, Ledger ultimately missed out for one very unusual reason: ‘The Lord of the Rings’.
Heath Ledger Could Have Been Will Turner In ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean’
When ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl’ was casting its lead heroes, Heath Ledger was reportedly one of the actors shortlisted to play Will Turner. According to IMDB trivia, the role ultimately came down to Ledger and Orlando Bloom. But director Gore Verbinski’s deciding factor came down to Bloom’s connection to ‘The Lord of the Rings’.

After learning that Bloom had played Legolas in the franchise, Verbinski apparently made the final call by choosing him for the role. He believed the actor would be a more commercially valuable option.
Bloom portrayed the role in ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring’ (2001), ‘The Two Towers’ (2002), and ‘The Return of the King’ (2003). He was an instantly recognisable face for the audience. It wasn’t surprising that Disney viewed him as the safer and more profitable option.
Heath Ledgerโs Biggest Breakthrough Was Still Ahead
Looking back now, it is surprising to think Heath Ledger almost joined the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ franchise. Back in 2003, his career was still on a very different trajectory.

Ledger had already earned recognition through films like ‘10 Things I Hate About You‘, ‘The Patriot‘ and ‘A Knightโs Tale‘. However, he was still best known as Patrick Verona, the charming rom-com lead, rather than the face of a major blockbuster franchise.
That difference ultimately worked for Bloom. Having already established himself through ‘The Lord of the Rings’, he joined ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ with a certain global recognition. Disneyโs gamble certainly paid off as Bloomโs portrayal of Will Turner became one of the defining elements of the franchise.
Ledger, meanwhile, did not have to wait much longer for his own breakthrough. Today, he is remembered as one of the most celebrated actors of his generation. Even so, it is fascinating to imagine what ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ would have looked like had Heath Ledger sailed alongside Captain Jack Sparrow.
