Celine Dion suffers from a rare neurological disease called stiff person syndrome and she recently opened up about her struggles with it. Dion’s career took a major hit as she wasn’t able to sing due to the disease.
Celine wanted to share her struggles through a documentary but with her voice. Director Irene Taylor shared her early conversation with Celine regarding the project and their intention behind it.
Celine Dion Wanted To Add Her Voice To Her Documentary
In an interview with HT, Irene Taylor revealed her conversations with Celine on how they wanted the documentary to be. Celine wanted to be truthful to her audience and asked her whether they could use her voice in the film. Celine asked Irene: “Would it be okay, and would it be possible for you to make a film about me where I am the only voice?’ ‘Would it be possible to make a film where no one else is talking about me, but I get to just talk about myself?”
Irene also had the same vision related to the movie and they both were on the same page with this. Irene continued, “So, from the beginning, we were on the same page. It was a story about her in this time in her life… and she would be the only person giving us insight of herself.”

The Vision Behind The Celine Dion Documentary
Fans are an integral part of the life of a performer. Irene knew Celine Dion had a major influence on the fans in her life. Considering this, Irene explained her state of mind: “Well, I did not make the film for the fans, I am grateful for her fans. Because I see they give her so much… they bring a lot of joy to her. Not just building her ego, but joy. True joy”.
She added, “I really made a film that I wanted to watch and did not meet her as a fan. I met her as a professional who would approach it with a bit of a cooler detached perspective”.
Irene kept Celine Dion’s fans in the back of her mind while working on the movie but the New York premiere led her to a realization, “I realized that the fan universe is like a film unto its own. It is, in her world, her fan base is really quite rare.”
‘I Am: Celine Dion’ will release on Prime Video on June 25.
