Few early 2000s romantic dramas still remain as beloved as ‘A Walk To Remember’. And it is undeniable that much of its charm comes down to Mandy Moore’s unforgettable portrayal of Jamie Sullivan.
But according to director Adam Shankman, we almost didn’t get Moore’s iconic performance of ‘Only Hope’ because the studio kept pushing for another contender.
The Star Warner Bros. Wanted Instead Of Mandy Moore In ‘A Walk To Remember’

During a recent appearance on the Las Culturistas podcast, Adam Shankman revealed that Warner Bros. originally wanted Jessica Simpson to play Jamie Sullivan, the kind-hearted and deeply religious daughter of the town minister in ‘A Walk to Remember‘.

The topic came up when podcast co-host Matt Rogers praised Mandy Moore’s performance, noting how naturally she conveyed “all that vulnerability and all of that kindness and goodness” throughout the film. In response, Shankman shared that Moore was not the studio’s first choice.
According to the director, Warner Bros. believed Simpson was a strong fit for the role because of her public image and her openness about her Christian faith. Since Jamie’s faith plays a major role in the story, studio executives felt Simpson aligned well with the character.
However, that was not the only reason behind the studio’s interest. Shankman explained that Andrew Lloyd Webber was considering Simpson for the role of Christine Daaé in an upcoming adaptation of ‘The Phantom of the Opera‘.
As a result, Warner Bros. hoped to use ‘A Walk to Remember‘ as a way to evaluate her acting potential. “Andrew Webber was interested in [Simpson] for Christine in Phantom, and they wanted to use Walk to Remember to kind of audition that,” Shankman shared.
Mandy Moore’s Personality Finally Sealed The Deal

Despite the studio’s preference, Adam Shankman found himself drawn to a completely different singer. After a meeting with Simpson and her father, the director was driving home when he heard Moore’s hit song “I Wanna Be With You” on the radio. In that exact moment, he knew he had found the perfect Jamie Sullivan.

Specifically, Shankman said Moore’s “breathiness” matched exactly how he envisioned Jamie singing in the film. Then, when he later saw the cover of Moore’s So Real album, the picture became even clearer in his mind.
At that moment, he was convinced he had found his Jamie Sullivan. Looking at the album cover, he remembered thinking, “That’s her. That’s Jamie.” Still, there was one question left to answer. As Shankman jokingly recalled, “I went, oh my god. Please, God, let her be able to act.”
Fortunately, Moore proved to be exactly what he was hoping for. During their first meeting, she embodied every aspect of the character. Her natural sweetness, innocence, and sincerity convinced him that she could bring Jamie Sullivan to life. For more than two decades now, we can see that this casting decision was a stroke of genius.
