After over a decade and a half, the enchanting world of Narnia is finally reopening its doors through a Netflix adaptation. With a 2027 release, it will avoid direct competition with HBO‘s ‘Harry Potter’ reboot, slated to premiere later this year. But the burning question remains: which beloved magical reboot will charm viewers more?
Whether the new ‘Narnia‘ series outshines the decade-long adaptation of the wizarding world books remains to be seen. But here are our reasons for looking forward to Greta Gerwig’s version of the fantasy saga over another Hogwarts reimagining.
5. Fresh storyline: The Magician’s Nephew

Netflix has decided not to bore the Narnia fans with the same storylines explored in the original trilogy. Instead, ‘The Magician’s Nephew’ will draw from the sixth book in the series by C.S. Lewis and will shed light on the origins of Narnia, Aslan, and how the magical world came into being. In a nutshell, the first film will serve as a prequel to the old movies, which focused on the stories of the Witch, the Pevensie siblings, and Prince Caspian.
Mind you, this is a well-thought-out decision after the poor critical and commercial reception of ‘The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.’ The third part of the original franchise didn’t feature Peter and Susan, as their time in the magical world had run out. Well, it made viewers lose both interest and loyalty. This time, the streaming giant and Gerwig are making sure not to repeat the same mistake by offering fans a fresh arc. On the other hand, HBO plans to remain faithful to the J.K. Rowling books, beginning the adaptation in the same sequence as the novels.

4. Netflix Going with a Hybrid Release

Netflix is opting for a hybrid release model for its ambitious fantasy project, spearheaded by the iconic Greta Gerwig. While the streamer had previously planned a 2026 release, the project will now have a 45-day theatrical run next year. The movie will hit the IMAX theaters on February 12, 2027, ahead of its Netflix release on April 2 of the same year. This gap between big-screen releases and streaming is indeed a major experiment for the platform. But if it pays off, the movie can give them leverage over the ‘Harry Potter’ reboot, which will premiere only on the streaming platform in December 2025.
3. Netflix’s Massive Investment

Known for its high productions such as ‘Game of Thrones,’ ‘The Last of Us,’ and ‘The Pacific,’ HBO plans to leave no stone unturned in re-creating the magical world of Hogwarts. The ‘Harry Potter’ reboot could become one of the most expensive shows in television history, with an expected budget of approximately $4 billion. However, Netflix is counting on the community feeling that the movie will garner after its theatrical run.
Most importantly, Netflix is rumored to be investing heavily in the project. “I’ve heard it’s going to be the most expensive movie Netflix has ever made,” entertainment journalist Matthew Belloni recently revealed on The Town with Matthew Belloni podcast. “If not the most, with apologies to the Russo brothers here, but it’s going to be among the most expensive movies that Netflix has ever made.” He referred to the first movie in the seven-part series for which Netflix has already secured the rights.

2. Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” Touch

Coming off her ‘Barbie’ success, Greta Gerwig has serious talent to transform deep themes into vibrant, breathtaking visuals. The blockbuster interiors of the Barbie Dreamhouse and the Mattel headquarters from the Margot Robbie-backed movie left viewers in awe. Her new vision can outshine TV veterans such as Francesca Gardiner and Jon Brown, who are leading the upcoming ‘Harry Potter’ show.
Gerwig is letting her imagination flow in ‘The Magician’s Nephew,’ while staying true to the source material. According to recent reports, she has swapped the book’s Victorian setting for a post-war world of 1955. By doing so, she plans to add a modern touch and cater to the audience that earlier criticized the novel for being very conventional and intellectual. It will also interest loyal readers, who will be curious to see how the characters navigate a relatively new environment.
1. Star-Studded Cast

While the HBO reboot raised eyebrows for its casting after the network swapped the race and nationality of certain characters, the move frustrated some loyal fans, who had openly boycotted the project before its release. On the other hand, the new ‘Narnia’ project is going big by hiring A-listers such as Meryl Streep (rumored), Daniel Craig, Emma Mackey, Ciarán Hinds, and Carey Mulligan. Mackey will star as Queen Jadis, Craig as Uncle Andrew, Mulligan as Mabel Kirke, and Streep as the central character, Aslan.
The ‘Harry Potter‘ show will introduce Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. If the trio’s chemistry fails to spark magic, the reboot could turn into a dull affair.
