Why Is Taylor Swift Releasing The ‘Eras Tour’ Film In Theaters Instead Of A Streaming Platform?

The Taylor Swift phenomenon is nowhere near ceasing! It is growing by the multitude with each passing day since she released her tenth studio album, ‘Midnights.’ After the commercial success of the album and the streaming history it created, Swift announced the global ‘Eras Tour’ which she began in March 2023. Since then, the tour has been growing exponentially, with throngs of Swifties coming in large numbers to each venue.

Taylor Swift’s ‘Eras Tour’ just began, and it is already on the verge of becoming the highest-grossing tour in history. Many celebrities have attended the tour at various venues and called it an enthralling experience. During the tour, she also announced the release of Taylor’s version of her two albums, ‘Speak Now’ and ‘1989.’ Now, she will be premiering the ‘Eras Tour’ concert film across theaters in North America, unlike other concert films and documentaries.

‘Eras Tour’ North America leg came to an end in August 2023. Taylor Swift, along with Sabrina Carpenter, is headed to Latin America after the successful concerts in Mexico. Before she heads to Brazil and Argentina, Swift announced the ‘Eras Tour’ film, which will be released in October 2023.

The film will be distributed by the AMC theater chain. The tour has already sold tickets worth $26 million in presales, surpassing the record of ‘Spiderman: No Way Home.’

With the ‘Eras Tour’ concert film, Taylor Swift broke her tradition of releasing documentaries and concert films on streaming platforms. The ‘Miss Americana’ documentary is on Netflix. She released ‘Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions’ on Disney+, while ‘The 1989 Tour Live’ is on Apple Music. The ‘Eras Tour’ is different from the previous tours by the artist.

The tour has become a pivotal moment in popular culture for her fans. The theatrics, themes, and fashion of all her eras have confluenced, and the tour has become a symbol of the celebration of the same. There are bracelets handed out, and the Swifties are turning into curated outfits. So she wanted to replicate the same experience of communal celebration by releasing it in theaters.

Jonathan Kuuskoski told CNN that Taylor Swift is releasing the concert film in theaters due to its ability to recreate the concert experience. Jonathan said, “The movie basically functions as an overflow room for the concert tour.”
