Today, it is impossible to think of ‘Titanic’ without picturing Leonardo DiCaprio as Jack Dawson. The role is definitely one of the most defining performances of his career. But, surprisingly, the actor was far from eager to take it on.
From dismissing the script to refusing to screen test, James Cameron had to overcome multiple hurdles to convince DiCaprio to join the film that would ultimately turn him into a global superstar.
James Cameron Had To Convince Leonardo DiCaprio That ‘Titanic’ Was Worth Doing
Despite ‘Titanic’ becoming the role that launched him into superstardom, Leonardo DiCaprio had little interest in playing Jack Dawson when he was first approached by James Cameron. The reason behind it was surprisingly simple.

As Cameron told People magazine, “I had to really twist his arm to be in the movie. He didn’t want to do it. He thought it was boring.”
According to the filmmaker, DiCaprio was only interested in accepting roles that felt challenging to him. Cameron had to convince him that the role in ‘Titanic’ was far more difficult than it appeared.
Cameron explained in an interview with Fox News, “He thought it was too easy. ‘Leading man, I don’t want to do that. I want to do a guy with a drug addiction problem, or whatever.’ He wanted more of a problem, because he saw that as actable”.
But that perspective ultimately changed when Cameron pointed out one legendary example. “I said, ‘No, it’s when you can do what Jimmy Stewart does and just stand there and just be the centre,’ and that’s what convinced him,” the director said.
DiCaprio Didn’t Even Want To Screen Test With Kate Winslet Until Cameron Gave Him An Ultimatum
Getting DiCaprio interested in the role was only the first hurdle. Cameron later revealed that the actor even refused to do a screen test opposite Kate Winslet, who had already secured the role of Rose.

As Cameron recalled in an interview with GQ, DiCaprio believed he was simply returning for another meeting with Winslet when he was called in. According to the director, DiCaprio charmed everyone in the office, as nearly every woman working there found an excuse to meet him. That was when Cameron told him about the screen test.
“He said, ‘You mean, I’m reading?’ I said, ‘Yeah.’ He said, ‘Oh, I don’t read,'” Cameron recalled.
At this point, the director had to give him an ultimatum. He simply thanked the actor for coming and ended the meeting. A surprised DiCaprio quickly returned to ask whether that meant he was losing the role. Cameron’s answer was firm:
“You’re going to read, or you’re not going to get the part.”

Ultimately, DiCaprio agreed to do the screen test, although he was visibly uninterested in doing so. A transformation happened the moment the camera started rolling.
“Every ounce of his entire being is just so negative—right up until I said, ‘Action.’ Then he turned into Jack,” Cameron said.
Watching DiCaprio and Winslet perform together instantly erased any doubts for Cameron. “Kate just lit up… Dark clouds had opened up, and a ray of sun came down and lit up Jack. I’m like, ‘All right. He’s the guy.'”
In the end, all the effort Cameron put into securing the casting was more than justified. As he himself said, “I can’t imagine that film without him and without her”.
More than two decades later, Cameron’s comments feel especially fitting. Despite a career spanning multiple blockbuster films, DiCaprio’s chemistry with Kate Winslet and his portrayal of Jack Dawson continue to have a legacy of their own.
