Jim Carrey may be ready to steal Christmas once again, even after previously admitting that playing the Grinch was one of the most physically demanding experiences of his career. The news comes as a surprise because Carrey previously revealed that playing the Grinch in ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas‘ was far from a magical experience.

In fact, the heavy makeup and prosthetics made the role so difficult that he struggled to breathe while filming. Now, a major advancement in filmmaking technology could be the reason he is willing to step back into the role.

A sequel to ‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas‘ is reportedly in development, with Carrey in talks to reprise his role. The actor previously admitted that returning to the character seemed difficult because of the exhausting makeup process he endured while making the 2000 film.

Speaking in 2024, Carrey explained just how challenging the experience was. “The thing about it is, on the day, I do that with a ton of makeup and can hardly breathe. It was an extremely excruciating process,” he said.

The actor revealed that he pushed through the discomfort because he knew children loved the character. Even so, the physical demands of becoming the Grinch remained one of the biggest obstacles to any potential return.

Carrey also explained why his outlook has changed after 25 years. Advances in motion-capture technology could allow him to play the Grinch without spending hours buried under layers of makeup and prosthetics.

The children were in my mind all the time. ‘It’s for the kids. It’s for the kids. It’s for the kids.’ And now, with motion capture and things like that, I could be free to do other things. Anything is possible in this world.”

That comment has taken on new significance following reports of the sequel. Modern visual effects could make it possible for Carrey to deliver the same performance while avoiding many of the physical struggles that came with the original production.

The project is expected to reunite Carrey with director Ron Howard, who helmed the 2000 movie. Howard and Imagine Entertainment recently confirmed the sequel’s development through an Instagram post featuring Carrey in full Grinch costume. The caption read: “He’s a mean one… 💚 A sequel to How The Grinch Stole Christmas is in development.”

The new sequel is reportedly being written by Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer, and David Mandel. If the project moves forward as planned, audiences could see Carrey return to the Grinch for the first time in 25 years, thanks largely to the technological advances.
