Drake has been one of the biggest names in the hip-hop scene for more than a decade since his breakthrough mixtape ‘So Far Gone‘ dropped. After that, the artist has been dropping bangers and award-winning albums, garnering fans and followers and enjoying his status as one of the most successful rappers.
There’s someone, though, who doesn’t agree with Drake’s success. Fellow rapper Mos Def made a controversial statement recently where he claimed that Drake’s music isn’t real hip hop.

Mos Def Criticizes Drake’s Music
In an interview with The Cutting Room Floor, the 50-year-old rapper talked about his opinions on Drake’s music. During the interview he was asked, “Is Drake hip-hop?” To which Mos replied and said, “Why you doing this to me?”
He then continued and said, “Drake is pop to me. In the sense, like, if I was in Target in Houston and I heard a Drake song… It feels like a lot of his music is compatible with shopping. Or, you know, shopping with an edge in certain instances.”
He then called Drake’s music ‘likeable‘ and moved on and said, “What happens when this thing collapses? What happens when the columns start buckling? Are we not in some early stage of that, at this present hour? Are we seeing the collapse of the empire? Buying and selling, where’s the message that I can use? What’s in it for your audience apart from banging the pom-poms?”
