Ariana Grande‘s long-awaited album ‘Eternal Sunshine‘ has finally come out, and the reviews are a reminder of why Ari will forever be a pop icon. Grande’s 7th album seems to be a revelation into her private life and all the speculations surrounding it. The album features songs on different scales of emotions, but mostly vulnerable and revealing.
One such song, ‘We Can’t Be Friends‘ was released with a very telling music video. The plot of which, is inspired by the film ‘Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind.’
Ariana Grande’s ‘Eternal Sunshine’ Inspiration
Ariana Grande pays a perfect homage to Michael Gondry’s ‘Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind’ by incorporating the plot of a film into her music video for ‘We Can’t be Friends’.
In the video, she is seen in an office for people who want to have their memories removed, she signs a consent paper and goes through the procedure. As memories of her ex boyfriends get removed from her brain, the video progresses into all the memories she has with him. The video also parallels several iconic scenes from the film, including the scene where Kate Winslet and Jim Carrey lie down on an iced-up Montauk lake.
Grande’s video ends with her successfully completing the procedure and accidentally passing by her ex-boyfriend and his new girlfriend but she doesn’t remember him.
Previously, the ‘Yes, and?’ singer had teased the album with various hints using the film’s references. While fans speculated about what significance the film has to the album, post-release it’s quite clear.
She also wore a lot of Clementine Kruczynski (Kate Winslet’s character in the film) inspired outfits.

The album opened to insanely good reviews from publications as well as fans. Variety writes, “So what does Ari@30 sound like? Older and wiser, sure, but also seasoned, patient and, dare we say, mature, both lyrically and musically. If it felt like her last couple of albums represented finding her voice as an artist, now she’s really found it.”
The album received mostly 80+ scores from publications, with the exception of Rolling Stone, who gave the album a perfect 100.
