Which Songs In Taylor Swift’s ‘1989’ Album Are About Harry Styles?

Taylor Swift and Harry Styles were one of the dreamiest couples in 2012. The One Direction star had one of his most public romances with Swift, as the relationship gained a lot of media attention for the two being two of the most famous artists at the time. Needless to say, the short fling also inspired a lot of songs between both artists.

Swift and Styles apparently dated from December 2012 to January 2013, and even though their relationship didn’t last long, many of Swift and Styles’ best songs are thought to have been influenced by their passionate romance. Fans have often speculated about some lyrics that allegedly hint at one another, despite the fact that the two have never openly named one another in their songs. Before the release of ‘1989 (Taylor’s Version)‘, which could potentially feature even more songs about Styles, here are some songs in the album that are most definitely about him.

The most obvious one on the list is ‘Style‘ from ‘1989‘. And yes, the title is definitely an ode to Harry Styles. The song is about a passionate romance where the two people keep going back to each other, never being able to cut ties. In the song, Swift describes the person as someone who had a ‘James Dean, daydream look’ in their eyes, which obviously seemed to be a reference to Harry. Furthermore, she sings, ‘You got that long hair, slicked back, white T-shirt’, which really resembles Harry’s appearance at the time.

This song perhaps is the most speculated and definitive dedication to Styles. Fans are now expecting Taylor to release ‘Style‘ ft. Harry Styles in the rerecorded version.

    Out Of The Woods

Out Of The Woods‘ symbolizes the ups and downs in a relationship and the anxiety that comes with them. This song has been speculated to be about Harry Styles. In the music video, Taylor Swift is seen wearing a paper plane necklace and sings the lyrics: “Two paper aeroplanes flying”. This signifies the matching pair of necklaces the pair had. The bridge of the song is also an ode to Styles and Swift’s accident in real life. She sings, “Remember when you hit the brakes too soon/ twenty stitches in a hospital room.”

Speaking of the song, Swift said, “This song is about the fragility and kind of breakable nature of some relationships, this was a relationship where it was, kind of, living day-to-day, wondering where it was going, if it was going to go anywhere, if it was gonna end the next day. It was a relationship where you kind of never feel like you’re standing on solid ground. And that kind of a feeling brings on excitement but also extreme anxiety and, kind of a frantic feeling of wondering endless questions.” She added that she questions “Are we out of the woods” repetitively in the song about the anxious feelings you feel in a relationship. “It stresses that even if a relationship is breakable and fragile and full of anxiety, it doesn’t mean it isn’t worthwhile, exciting, beautiful, and all the things that we look for,” Swift added.

    I Know Places

One of the hardest things for a celebrity is to have their relationship out in public with every move being watched and scrutinized. And this was exactly how Harry and Taylor’s relationship was. It’s no secret that the pair caught the attention of the media largely. They couldn’t be anywhere without fans and paparazzi following them.

Taylor mentions in the song how the extra media attention she receives makes it more difficult for her to find consistency in a relationship. Swift and Styles were the subjects of intense media coverage. They frequently had to avoid paparazzi wanting to grab images of them.

The song is about them attempting to date while under close observation. The song’s lyrics make frequent use of themes like cameras, late-night gatherings, and foxes being hunted by hunters. In the end, the relationship fell apart because of the spotlight that was forcefully placed on them. The intro to the song goes: “You stand with your hand on my waistline/ It’s a scene, and we’re out here in plain sight/ I can hear them whisper as we pass by/ It’s a bad sign, bad sign.”

    Wonderland

Taylor Swift on the ‘Wonderland’ cover

The lyrics of ‘Wonderland‘ make extremely specific references to that special someone. Finding a specific spot where you can believe something will stay forever. She sings about someone with green eyes and a Cheshire Cat smile. Spoiler alert: Harry Styles has green eyes and is from Cheshire. She sings about a doomed love that is intoxicating and addictive yet unavoidably a sign of trouble: “Didn’t they tell us don’t rush into things? Didn’t you flash your green eyes at me?

She further sings: Didn’t you calm my fears with the Cheshire cat smile?” It’s also apparent that Taylor is singing about being in a bubble with someone, ignoring the warnings and red flags.
