Netflix Series ‘3 Body Problem’ Sparks Jingoistic Anger In China

Netflix isn’t available in China due to government restrictions, but people can still access the content through pirated sites. The contention though is a Netflix adaptation of the Chinese sci-fi novel, ‘The Three-Body Problem‘, whose English adaptation series is 3 Body Problems.

The series has been getting mixed reactions from Chinese social media accounts since it premiered. People are claiming that it shows China in a bad light and is creating a sense of anger and opinion mismatch among the nationalists.

The series is inspired by the award-winning novel ‘The Three-Body Problem‘ by Liu Cixin. It is part of a trilogy and is one of the most celebrated and successful novels worldwide. It is also recommended by former US president Barack Obama.

After the series premiered, mixed opinions from Chinese viewers arose and the issue became political. Some said that the series puts China in a bad light, while others claimed it is an actual representation of the events that occurred, and a few are even of the opinion that it is another trick of the big-budget American production house.

The series ‘3 Body Problems‘ opened up with a tormenting scene of Mao Zedong’s Cultural Revolution showcasing a large amount of bloodshed throughout. A science professor was beaten to death and murdered by his own students in front of his daughter.

People commented things like “Netflix you don’t understand ‘The Three-Body Problem’ or Ye Wenjie at all!” while some defended the series by saying that the history was much worse than what is being shown. Such scenes were prominent during that time in history, with people being brutally tortured by Mao’s soldiers.

Liu Cixin during an interview in 2019 said how he wanted the book adaptation to start with the cultural revolution scenes of Mao but he was also afraid that it would get banned due to government censorship.

The story is based in London with a different set of characters and is less focused on the ‘Chinese’ aspect. Some people argue that the makers of the series are glorifying the West rather than focusing on the actual storyline.
