“Ridiculous And Fantastical”: Kate Middleton’s Uncle Bashes His Family’s Portrayal On ‘The Crown’, Says They Are ‘A Bit Too Classy’ To Watch The Netflix Show

The Crown‘ has been in the limelight for both good and bad reasons. While the show has been lauded for the art of storytelling and the impeccable portrayal of the royal family, it has also created a lot of controversy over the authenticity of its storytelling.

Several members of the royal family have expressed their disdain for the show, claiming that many things portrayed on the show are misleading. It has even caused a lot of stir amongst the royal family members. In another twist, Kate Middleton‘s uncle Gary Middleton has now spoken up against the depiction of his family on the show.

Speaking on the latest episode of the Daily Mail’s ‘The Crown: Fact or Fiction‘ podcast, Carole Middleton’s brother Gary Goldsmith didn’t hold back expressing his disappointment with the show. Referring to how his family was depicted in the sixth and final season of Netflix’s hit series ‘The Crown’, Goldsmith said it drifted into a “fantasy world” and became “ridiculous and fantastical.”

Introduced as the “proud and loyal brother of Carole Middleton” on the show, Goldsmith said that though he “really enjoyed” the first series of ‘The Crown’, he stopped after it seemed to “just drift into this fantasy world”

There’s so many parts of it that I don’t agree with, and I think the narrative and for trying to get headlines and view an audience. So once it started becoming ridiculous and fantastical, it was very difficult to watch, so I stopped,” he said.

When asked if his sister Carole would watch the show, Goldsmith said, “I think the family is a bit too classy to watch stuff like that.” However, expressed surprise as to why his sister did not take legal action against the showmakers for portraying her in such bad light.

I don’t understand why Carole hasn’t taken legal action cause literally it’s that bad. Carole isn’t that manipulative, evil person, sat in a dungeon, coming up by ways by which she can actually force her way into the royal family. She’s strong-willed, she’s got opinions, that’s why we’ve got the kids and family we’ve got today,” he said.

Season 6 of ‘The Crown specifically garnered attention after it introduced Princess Kate played by Meg Bellamy into the storyline. The show also depicted her love story with Prince William. In the episode titled ‘Hope Street’, the show depicted Carole advising Kate to “show off those legs” during a university fashion show.

Goldsmith objected to the show’s creative liberty taken here, defending his niece and dismissing the portrayal as “ridiculous. First and foremost, Kate did brilliantly well to get into St. Andrews. She’s an amazing, an amazing, an amazing girl, but that wasn’t noted. It was all to do with ‘Kate you’ve got to be here on this day, wearing these clothes, doing these things, showing your legs’, and it’s just not my family. It’s not the way Carole operates,” Goldsmith said.

Mum and Dad were the most brilliant people. The thought of Carole suggesting to my mum’s granddaughter to show a bit of leg, it is so far away from the truth. It’s just ridiculous,” he said.

While Kate Middleton has not publicly commented on the show, several members of the royal family have. King Charles himself reportedly joked about his portrayal on Netflix during an event in 2021.

The Crown‘ continues to captivate audiences amid the controversy and is available for streaming on Netflix.
