Netflix has garnered the attention of its viewers with another real-life crime docuseries released in November 2022. ‘Crime Scene: The Texas Killing Fields’ has entered the list of Netflix’s Global Top 10 list. The show was viewed for 23,880,000 hours. It is based on the mysterious murders that happened in the deserted Interstate stretch between Houston and Galveston. It is deemed as the ‘Highway To Hell’. The murder spree began in the late 1970s and continued till the next millennium in 2006.

During that period, 30-35 slain women were brutally killed. The three episodes docuseries first shows us how a group of the Texan community discovered human skulls in 1984, which were left there since the 1970s.

Over the period, dozens of bodies were found along that strip of the farm. But, the investigative officers identified four bodies—Laura Miller, Heidi Fye, Jane Doe (Audrey Lee Cook), and Laura Smither. All were girls who were teenagers or adults.

There was a pattern in which they were killed and disposed of—under a tree, naked, on their back, and arms folded. The investigative officers found a pattern in the killings. Unfortunately, the mystery remains unsolved, but over the years police have found some primary suspects.

The bodies found were a mix of women from different age groups. Jane Doe aka Audrey Lee Cook was a 30-year-old woman. Laura Smither, a 12-year-old girl, and an aspiring ballerina from Friendswood was also found dead. The investigation is still in progress, and there are two prime suspects found in the case—Robert Abel, a former NASA scientist and the field owner, and Clyde Hendrick, a former construction worker.

Abel was at the top of the list of prime suspects in the gruesome murders. The suspicion was growing due to his fervent search for evidence and self-investigation. But, year after year, the police couldn’t find any strong evidence against him. Another man is Clyde Hendrick. He was a construction worker when the murders happened in the area. He was a womanizer and had a criminal history.

But, he was not pinned as the perpetrator of the field murders. All hopes were not lost. In 2012, a man named Kevin Edison Smith was convicted of the murder of 13-year-old Krystal Jean Baker in the same area in 1996. These murders could be done by different people or by one person. It is still a mystery.
