What Is ‘OneTaste’, The Sexual Cult Of L.A. And Inspiration For New Netflix Documentary?

Netflix is on a roll when it comes to true crime series and documentaries! It all started when it released the Jeffrey Dahmer docuseries by Ryan Murphy. The docuseries was hailed for Evan Peters’ performance and it was viewed for 701.37 million hours. Now, it is coming up with a new documentary called ‘Orgasm Inc: The Story Of OneTaste’.The company OneTaste in Los Angeles became an instantaneous success in the 2000s.

The wellness company centered around sexual well-being with the aim that female orgasms could be used to transform the world. The Netflix documentary ‘Orgasm Inc: The Story of OneTaste’ was released on November 5th, 2022. As per Netflix, the documentary “promised spiritual enlightenment and community through 15-minute female orgasms.” The company was co-founded by Robert Kandell and Nicole Daedone in 2004. The website of OneTaste read, “By 2018, over 35,000 people had participated in our in-person events, over 16,000 had taken classes and workshops. Over 1,300 completed our Coaching Program and tens of thousands of people worldwide had learned to OM [Orgasmic Meditation]”

Orgasmic meditation or it is called fondly as OM is a meditation that includes mindfulness and pleasure. However, it is very specific. During the meditation, a woman’s clitoris is touched and stroked for 15 minutes by her partner or another man. The woman gets naked from the waist down. Many celebrities like Kourtney Kardashian promoted the center. The costs were between $149-$199 per session.

The CEO of OneTaste, which is now rebranded as the Institute of OM says, “The intention is not to serve as foreplay or to get the participants to orgasm.” However, over the years, the company faced backlash over the prices leaving many of its customers debt-ridden. People started calling it a ‘sexual wellness’ cult. But, things started dwindling when employees started alleging that it became a ‘prostitution ring’ and an FBI probe started after allegations of ‘sex trafficking, prostitution, and violations of labor law.’

Before the release of the documentary, 15 people, who were “current or former associates, students and/or employees, and people who participated in classes and seminars” filed a lawsuit. They alleged that the documentary hampers their privacy and it includes nudity. However, on November 5th, 2022, the Judge allowed the documentary to be released.

As per Judge James Chalfant, the film does not contain any explicit material that shows the plaintiffs. The director Sarah Gibson said that “Much of the archival video in the film is not sexual, but comes from OneTaste social events, lectures, and promotional materials.”

The co-directors Sarah Gibson and Sloane Klevin were very cautious about the material. “The footage featured in our film was all legally obtained by us and much was already public and had been distributed by OneTaste themselves, or on Youtube, or in past news reports.”

Gibson continued, “No one’s rights have been violated by the footage we used. When there was more sensitive footage included, we used it sparingly and took immense care and responsibility to edit and crop as to not exploit or sensationalize it.”
