There Has Been Contention Between Serbs And Ethnic Albanians In Kosovo
After two decades, the tension between ethnic Albanians and Serbs in Kosovo is flaring up. To provide the geographical location, Kosovo is a small country landlocked in the Balkans with neighboring countries like Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Albania. Kosovo was a part of Yugoslavia in the pre-cold war period. After the disintegration of the USSR, in 1992, it separated from Yugoslavia and declared itself an autonomous country.
So, the Serbs consider Kosovo the origin of their nation. However, in the country, 1.8 million people reside there, 92% are Albanians, and only 6% are Serbian. The Kosovo War was fought between February 1998 to June 1999. But, NATO intervened with its bombing campaign in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia when ethnic cleansing was taking place in Serbia against Kosovar Albanians.
But, Kosovo declared its independence in 2008. The situation has started getting tense again in the north of Kosovo where Pristina’s authorities and Serbs are at loggerheads. In August 2022, the Kosovo authorities had to shut down two borders i.e., Bernjak and Jarinje due to escalating tensions from the Serbs, who shot policemen. Neither Serbia nor Albania is letting go of the country with international communities and countries trying to mediate.
