In February 2021, an accident occurred in Mineola, Long Island. Charles Polevich, who has a drilling and water purification business, hit Robert Maraj, father of Super Bass artist. The accident left him brutally injured.  Polevich did get out of the car to look at the injured man but did not call 911 for help. Instead, he drove off, parked his car in the garage, and covered it with a tarp to dodge any allegations.

The detective on the case, Stephen Fitzpatrick, said in a conference back in 2021 that Charles was driving a 1992 Volvo Station Wagon that’s “more distinctive than modern cars.”

Unfortunately, Robert Maraj succumbed to the injuries and died the next day. On Friday, Polevich admitted fleeing from the scenes and was charged with a felony for tampering with the evidence.

The judge, Howard Sturim sentenced him to “no more than one year in jail,” with community service, and a license suspension. The next date is due on August 3, 2022. Polevich’s attorney, Marc Genn, told in a statement his client was “extremely remorseful for any role he may have played in Mr Maraj’s death. “He said, “Mr Polevich’s life story is one of helping others, which makes this case so out of character.”

Mr Sturim continued, “There are no allegations of substance use or abuse as causative of his conduct we believe  that a medical heart issue contributed to Mr Polevich’s consumer Mr Polevich could not be more sorry for the loss of Mr Maraj.” However, attorneys’ office spokesperson, Brendan Bosh was critical of the penalty. They said, “Given the severity of the defendant’s conduct, we disagree with the sentencing commitment from the court.”

Nicki Minaj’s widowed mother, Carol Maraj was “not happy” with the verdict. She expressed her resentment, “I’m not happy with that… one year in jail. I’m not happy with that. I was angry, very, very angry [seeing Polevich in court] I started to shake because it brought back all the memories of that night when I was sitting in the hospital.” Carol Minaj has sued him for $150 million. She continued, “I’ll say what I have to say at sentencing.”

Nicki Minaj did not comment about the unfortunate paternal loss. In May 2021, she posted a message on her website that said her father’s death had been “the most devastating loss of my life.” She wrote, “I find myself wanting to call him all the time,” Minaj wrote at the time. “More so now that he’s gone. Life is funny that way. May his soul rest in paradise. He was very loved & will be very missed.”
