It’s only natural for some creative rub-off to occur when an actor goes from the heavy green-screened realm of superhero blockbusters to a tightly run set helmed by one of the all-time greats. That’s exactly what happened with Tom Holland on the set of Christopher Nolan‘s upcoming mythic epic The Odyssey.’ The actor emerged from the experience with an entirely fresh approach to blockbuster filmmaking.

In fact, Holland used it when jumping back into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Ahead of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ release, Holland detailed how watching Nolan’s precision changed the way he approached Peter Parker in his next adventure. And instead of going through the usual studio boilerplate, the actor began applying this knowledge to a substantial behind-the-scenes reform movement.

In an interview with ‘GQ,’ Tom Holland revealed that working with Christopher Nolan on ‘The Odyssey‘ significantly influenced his approach to ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day.’ While developing the superhero franchise’s fourth installment, Holland said he frequently cited Nolan’s strategy in discussions with Sony and Marvel executives.

The actor recalled calling up the studio repeatedly, saying, “Well, Chris is doing it this way. This is how I think we should be doing it.” Further, Holland said working with the ‘Tenet’ director has taught him how a big blockbuster can benefit from preparation and a strong creative vision.

“I was really able to lay down the law and say, ‘We are not going to come to [the] set and figure it out. We need to know why we are making this movie beyond the fact that it’s Spider-Man 4 and they make loads of money, and we’re going to just have a big summer. Why are we making this movie?'” he added.

Instead of just chugging along because another Spider-Man movie was inevitable, Holland pushed for more time to develop it. He argued for better-planned, funded, and story-serving key creative decisions. The actor also implied that the extra time given to the project during development ultimately improved the writing and strengthened what the film was ultimately going for.

According to reports, Holland delayed production of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ to shoot for Nolan’s adaptation of the Greek epic saga. The actor highlighted that the Oscar-winning filmmaker’s preparation and confidence were immediately apparent during production.

The British actor was especially struck by how Nolan always knew exactly what he wanted from every scene and how the crew brought that vision to life so efficiently in each shot. Watching the director do his job gave Holland firsthand insight into the advantages of meticulous organization and artistic rigor in such a large-scale endeavor.

In the end, the experience changed Holland’s own view on filmmaking. He said Nolan’s ability to balance lofty artistic ambitions with big-budget spectacle particularly impressed him and convinced him that a successful franchise film requires more than star power and audience anticipation.

Those lessons were not lost on him, even after filming wrapped. They had a big impact on how he approached the next chapter of his Marvel series. Meanwhile, ‘The Odyssey’ debuts on July 17, followed by ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ arriving two weeks later on July 31, 2026.
